5	5	WHEREAS, Lloyd Jefferson Roberts, Jr., of Edinburg, an
6	6	admired community leader and exemplary businessman, passed away on
7	7	March 8, 2008, at the age of 91; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Tyler in 1916, "Bob" Roberts graduated from
9	9	Edinburg public schools and Edinburg Junior College before earning
10	10	a bachelor of business administration degree from The University of
11	11	Texas at Austin; he went on to serve his country as a member of the
12	12	U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of major, and he
13	13	later served as a member of both the U.S. Army Cavalry and the
14	14	Adjutant Generals Corps; and
15	15	WHEREAS, In 1947, Mr. Roberts went to work as general manager
16	16	of his family's car dealership, the Standard Motor Company, which
17	17	he later renamed Roberts Chevrolet; through the years, he was known
18	18	as a fair and friendly businessman whose employees remained with
19	19	him for decades, and he had the pleasure of working alongside
20	20	several family members, including his brother, Harry; he was
21	21	honored in 1997 as a 50-year Chevrolet dealer by the Texas
22	22	Automobile Dealers Association and retired some years later at the
23	23	age of 85; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Devoted to his community, this esteemed Texan
25	25	further distinguished himself through his leadership in the
26	26	Edinburg Kiwanis Club, the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, and the
27	27	Rio Grande Council of the Boy Scouts of America; in addition, he
28	28	shared his expertise with the urban renewal board of Edinburg, the
29	29	board of the Hidalgo County Road District, and the board of Hidalgo
30	30	Savings and Loan, which he served for nearly two decades; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts counted among his favorite pastimes
32	32	hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening, photography, and
33	33	astronomy, and he enjoyed music ranging from opera to country;
34	34	moreover, he was passionate about the landscape of South Texas and
35	35	delighted in taking long drives in the country; in all of his
36	36	endeavors, he was supported by his wife, Jo, with whom he shared
37	37	more than half a century; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Bob Roberts was a man of character, generosity, and
39	39	enthusiasm who made a lasting and positive difference to the
40	40	Edinburg community and to a wide circle of family, friends,
41	41	associates, and employees, and he will be remembered with great
42	42	affection and admiration by all those whose lives he touched; now,
43	43	therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
45	45	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Lloyd Jefferson "Bob"
46	46	Roberts, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
47	47	family: to his wife, Jo Lynge Roberts; to his daughter, Cynthia
48	48	Roberts; to his sons, Kip Roberts and Mitchell Roberts and his wife,
49	49	Paula; to his granddaughters, Jenna and Lana Roberts; to his
50	50	brother, Harry Roberts; to his brother-in-law, Ed Lynge and his
51	51	wife, Jane; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it
52	52	further
53	53	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
54	54	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
55	55	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lloyd
56	56	Jefferson "Bob" Roberts, Jr.
