44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Lloyd Jefferson Roberts, Jr., of Edinburg, an
66 admired community leader and exemplary businessman, passed away on
77 March 8, 2008, at the age of 91; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Tyler in 1916, "Bob" Roberts graduated from
99 Edinburg public schools and Edinburg Junior College before earning
1010 a bachelor of business administration degree from The University of
1111 Texas at Austin; he went on to serve his country as a member of the
1212 U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of major, and he
1313 later served as a member of both the U.S. Army Cavalry and the
1414 Adjutant Generals Corps; and
1515 WHEREAS, In 1947, Mr. Roberts went to work as general manager
1616 of his family's car dealership, the Standard Motor Company, which
1717 he later renamed Roberts Chevrolet; through the years, he was known
1818 as a fair and friendly businessman whose employees remained with
1919 him for decades, and he had the pleasure of working alongside
2020 several family members, including his brother, Harry; he was
2121 honored in 1997 as a 50-year Chevrolet dealer by the Texas
2222 Automobile Dealers Association and retired some years later at the
2323 age of 85; and
2424 WHEREAS, Devoted to his community, this esteemed Texan
2525 further distinguished himself through his leadership in the
2626 Edinburg Kiwanis Club, the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, and the
2727 Rio Grande Council of the Boy Scouts of America; in addition, he
2828 shared his expertise with the urban renewal board of Edinburg, the
2929 board of the Hidalgo County Road District, and the board of Hidalgo
3030 Savings and Loan, which he served for nearly two decades; and
3131 WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts counted among his favorite pastimes
3232 hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening, photography, and
3333 astronomy, and he enjoyed music ranging from opera to country;
3434 moreover, he was passionate about the landscape of South Texas and
3535 delighted in taking long drives in the country; in all of his
3636 endeavors, he was supported by his wife, Jo, with whom he shared
3737 more than half a century; and
3838 WHEREAS, Bob Roberts was a man of character, generosity, and
3939 enthusiasm who made a lasting and positive difference to the
4040 Edinburg community and to a wide circle of family, friends,
4141 associates, and employees, and he will be remembered with great
4242 affection and admiration by all those whose lives he touched; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4545 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Lloyd Jefferson "Bob"
4646 Roberts, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
4747 family: to his wife, Jo Lynge Roberts; to his daughter, Cynthia
4848 Roberts; to his sons, Kip Roberts and Mitchell Roberts and his wife,
4949 Paula; to his granddaughters, Jenna and Lana Roberts; to his
5050 brother, Harry Roberts; to his brother-in-law, Ed Lynge and his
5151 wife, Jane; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it
5252 further
5353 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5454 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5555 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lloyd
5656 Jefferson "Bob" Roberts, Jr.
