5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Representatives from the Cleburne Chamber of |

6 | 6 | | Commerce and the Cleburne Tuesday Forum are visiting the State |
---|
7 | 7 | | Capitol on March 3, 2009, and this occasion provides a fitting |
---|
8 | 8 | | opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this Johnson |
---|
9 | 9 | | County community; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The county seat, Cleburne was incorporated in 1871 |
---|
11 | 11 | | and named in honor of Confederate general Patrick R. Cleburne; |
---|
12 | 12 | | built near the earliest Johnson County road, it grew steadily as a |
---|
13 | 13 | | crossroads and transportation center; in 1881, the Gulf, Colorado, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and Santa Fe Railway was completed, stretching from Fort Worth |
---|
15 | 15 | | through Cleburne to Temple, and by 1890, the town's population had |
---|
16 | 16 | | risen to nearly 3,800; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1919, 84 charter members established the Cleburne |
---|
18 | 18 | | Chamber of Commerce with the goal of increasing local business; |
---|
19 | 19 | | around the time of its inception, the chamber was serving a |
---|
20 | 20 | | population of more than 12,000, and one of its first priorities was |
---|
21 | 21 | | to give the citizens better roads; after helping build U.S. Highway |
---|
22 | 22 | | 67, the organization worked to develop State Highway 122, which led |
---|
23 | 23 | | from Cleburne to Weatherford, and it also focused on promoting such |
---|
24 | 24 | | vital industries as agriculture; today, the chamber continues to |
---|
25 | 25 | | serve as a focal point for business and community development and is |
---|
26 | 26 | | commemorating the 90th anniversary of its founding in 2009; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, By the late 1960s, another group of dedicated |
---|
28 | 28 | | residents had emerged to address the concerns of the community; |
---|
29 | 29 | | created by local Rotarians as a platform for discussing current |
---|
30 | 30 | | issues, the Cleburne Tuesday Forum is made up of the top 100 |
---|
31 | 31 | | business leaders in Johnson County, who come together for monthly |
---|
32 | 32 | | luncheons; working alongside one another, the Cleburne Tuesday |
---|
33 | 33 | | Forum and Chamber of Commerce serve an area that today includes 40 |
---|
34 | 34 | | manufacturing facilities, a regional hospital, a community college |
---|
35 | 35 | | extension center, and a population of nearly 30,000; the city also |
---|
36 | 36 | | features Cleburne State Park, Lake Pat Cleburne, and Carnegie |
---|
37 | 37 | | Library, which houses the Layland Museum and a community theater |
---|
38 | 38 | | group; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Cleburne are working to preserve the |
---|
40 | 40 | | best of their past even as they look forward to a bright and |
---|
41 | 41 | | promising future, and they may indeed reflect with great pride on |
---|
42 | 42 | | the place they call home; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby honor the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce and the |
---|
45 | 45 | | Cleburne Tuesday Forum for their civic contributions and extend a |
---|
46 | 46 | | warm welcome to the delegates who are present in the State Capitol |
