5	5	WHEREAS, Aggies and Longhorns will unite today at the State
6	6	Capitol to celebrate Orange and Maroon Legislative Day 2009 and to
7	7	promote higher education in the State of Texas; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Alumni from the two schools total over 700,000, and
9	9	Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at Austin have a
10	10	combined annual enrollment of more than 95,000 students, with over
11	11	22,000 students receiving degrees each year; the schools boast
12	12	superb museums and libraries, including the George Bush
13	13	Presidential Library and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and
14	14	Museum, and both universities are renowned for their exceptional
15	15	research; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at
17	17	Austin help prepare Texas youth for higher education through the
18	18	universities' six outreach centers located throughout the state,
19	19	and more than 90 percent of the centers' participants have
20	20	successfully pursued higher education; and
21	21	WHEREAS, The universities' faculties feature Nobel laureates
22	22	and nationally recognized scholars, and the student bodies include
23	23	national merit scholars, Olympic gold medalists, and many of the
24	24	Lone Star State's most promising young people; in addition, the
25	25	schools offer an amazing range of postgraduate opportunities with
26	26	nearly 300 graduate degree programs; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at
28	28	Austin have established themselves as preeminent institutions of
29	29	higher education on the state, national, and international levels,
30	30	and Texans are fortunate to have access to these two exceptional
31	31	state university systems; now, therefore, be it
32	32	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
33	33	Legislature hereby recognize March 3, 2009, as Orange and Maroon
34	34	Legislative Day and commend alumni from Texas A&M University and
35	35	The University of Texas at Austin for their commitment to promoting
36	36	higher education in the Lone Star State.
