| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Live Oak County are gathering in Austin |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on March 3, 2009, to share their justifiable pride in their unique |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | part of the Lone Star State; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In the years before it became part of Texas, the area |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | now known as Live Oak County was home to Native American tribes, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Spanish and Mexican colonists, and Irish immigrants, and this rich |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | diversity of cultural influences has greatly influenced the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | development of the area; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The county was created on February 2, 1856, from San |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Patricio and Nueces Counties and was named after the imposing and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | majestic tree that grew throughout much of the region; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The rugged beauty of Live Oak County's brushy plains |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | is complemented by the Frio, Nueces, and Atascosa Rivers, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | lovers of the Texas landscape are drawn to such attractions as Lake |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon State Park; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The county's fortunes were first made on sheep, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | cattle, and cotton, but were diversified by the discovery of oil and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | natural gas in the county in the 1930s and by the discovery of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | uranium in the 1960s; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In addition to George West, the county seat, the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | communities encompassed by Live Oak County include Three Rivers, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Dinero, Lagarto, Oakville, Pernitas Point, and Whitsett, and we |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | join the residents of these towns in honoring their distinctive |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | part of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 3, 2009, as Live Oak County Day |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | at the State Capitol and extend to all those associated with this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | event best wishes for a meaningful and memorable day. |
