| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, March 2 marks the anniversary of that historic day |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | in 1836 when residents of Texas officially declared their |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | independence from Mexico, thereby giving birth to the independent |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | republic that would stand on its own for more than nine years before |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | becoming the 28th state of the Union; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The proud Texans who issued the call for |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | independence were members of the Convention of 1836 that met at |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 1 of that fateful year; as they |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | gathered, the valiant defenders of the Alamo were facing down the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | troops of Mexican ruler Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, and the Texas |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | revolutionaries had reached a crucial point in their campaign for |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | greater political freedom; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Stating the views of the revolutionaries in no |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | uncertain terms, the Texas Declaration of Independence listed their |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | grievances against the Mexican government and announced their bold |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | conclusion: "that the people of Texas do now constitute a free, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Sovereign, and independent republic, and are fully invested with |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | all the rights and attributes which properly belong to independent |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | nations"; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Winning that independence on the battlefield would |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | take another six weeks and the lives of many brave Texans, but the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 59 delegates who put their names to the Texas Declaration of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Independence had carried forth the vision of liberty, independence, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and just government that enlightens the Lone Star State to this very |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | day; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Texas Independence Day on March 2, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | 2009, and pay tribute to the immense contributions of those |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | individuals who helped found the nation and state of Texas. |
