5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, On March 11, 2009, people from across Atascosa |

6 | 6 | | County are traveling to the State Capitol to celebrate their |
---|
7 | 7 | | community's heritage and to share with fellow Texans their history, |
---|
8 | 8 | | traditions, and achievements; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The name Atascosa, derived from the Spanish word for |
---|
10 | 10 | | boggy terrain, was used to describe the area as early as 1788; |
---|
11 | 11 | | during the first part of the 19th century, this grassy prairie |
---|
12 | 12 | | region of South Texas attracted Spanish, Mexican, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | Anglo-American settlers, and by the time of the Texas Revolution, |
---|
14 | 14 | | its ranching industry was flourishing; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1856, the region was sufficiently populated to be |
---|
16 | 16 | | sectioned off from Bexar County; the original county seat at |
---|
17 | 17 | | Navatasco was later permanently moved to the centrally located town |
---|
18 | 18 | | of Jourdanton; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Situated next to the famous Camino Real, the county |
---|
20 | 20 | | has long benefited from its proximity to major transportation |
---|
21 | 21 | | arteries linking it with the Gulf Coast, the Rio Grande Valley, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | Mexico, as well as other major population centers; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Atascosa County enjoys the economic benefits reaped |
---|
24 | 24 | | by an abundance of natural resources and, blessed with productive |
---|
25 | 25 | | range and irrigated farmland, the area is known for its farming and |
---|
26 | 26 | | ranching industries; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Proud of its ranching heritage, Pleasanton, the |
---|
28 | 28 | | county's trading center, bills itself as the birthplace of the |
---|
29 | 29 | | cowboy, a designation symbolized by a large bronze statue in front |
---|
30 | 30 | | of city hall; in nearby Poteet, known to many as the Strawberry |
---|
31 | 31 | | Capital of the World, a seven-foot, 1,600-pound monument to the |
---|
32 | 32 | | fruit graces the front lawn of city hall and a Strawberry Festival, |
---|
33 | 33 | | the fourth-largest agricultural festival in the state, takes place |
---|
34 | 34 | | in April; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Other resources such as oil and gas also play a |
---|
36 | 36 | | significant role in the county's ongoing development, but the most |
---|
37 | 37 | | important asset in the area's increasingly diverse economy is |
---|
38 | 38 | | undoubtedly its industrious citizenry; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, residents of Atascosa |
---|
40 | 40 | | County have contributed to the economic and cultural development of |
---|
41 | 41 | | Texas, and they are justifiably proud of their rich history; it is |
---|
42 | 42 | | indeed appropriate that they be honored on this day; now, |
---|
43 | 43 | | therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 11, 2009, as Atascosa County Day |
---|
46 | 46 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to all visitors from |
---|
47 | 47 | | that fine county. |
