5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The people of Houston lost a brave and dedicated |
---|
6 | 6 | | public servant when police officer Timothy Scott Abernethy was |
---|
7 | 7 | | killed in the line of duty on December 7, 2008, at the age of 43; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, Tim Abernethy was born |
---|
9 | 9 | | on April 12, 1965; following in his father's footsteps, he joined |
---|
10 | 10 | | the United States Navy, and he worked as a submarine electronics |
---|
11 | 11 | | technician for nearly eight years; during that time, he met his |
---|
12 | 12 | | future wife, Stephanie, who was also serving in the Navy; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Officer Abernethy graduated from the Houston Police |
---|
14 | 14 | | Academy in 1997 and quickly began to distinguish himself through |
---|
15 | 15 | | his commitment and professionalism; he served on the Houston Police |
---|
16 | 16 | | Department's dive team, bike patrol, and gang unit and earned two |
---|
17 | 17 | | HPD Life Saving Awards; he completed his bachelor's degree while |
---|
18 | 18 | | serving the department, and in summer 2008, he was accepted for bomb |
---|
19 | 19 | | squad training; demonstrating an outstanding work ethic, he put in |
---|
20 | 20 | | many extra hours back at his desk after each day he spent in |
---|
21 | 21 | | training sessions; moreover, he also shared his time as a board |
---|
22 | 22 | | member for the Houston Police Officers Union; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Known for his quiet faith and courtesy to the |
---|
24 | 24 | | public, Officer Abernethy led by example; he was devoted to his |
---|
25 | 25 | | family and loved to talk about his daughter, Olivia, a graduate of |
---|
26 | 26 | | Texas A&M University, and his son, Timothy, who joined the U.S. |
---|
27 | 27 | | Navy; fellow officers admired his courage and integrity and enjoyed |
---|
28 | 28 | | the sly wit that lay beneath his solemn manner; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Tim Abernethy was an exceptional police officer who |
---|
30 | 30 | | set and achieved the highest standards, and he will be remembered |
---|
31 | 31 | | not only for his great sacrifice, but for the way he lived each day |
---|
32 | 32 | | in service to others; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Officer Timothy Scott |

35 | 35 | | Abernethy and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: |

36 | 36 | | to his wife, Stephanie Abernethy; to his daughter, Olivia Ann |

37 | 37 | | Abernethy; to his son, Timothy Scott Abernethy, Jr.; to his |
