44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The people of Houston lost a brave and dedicated
66 public servant when police officer Timothy Scott Abernethy was
77 killed in the line of duty on December 7, 2008, at the age of 43; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, Tim Abernethy was born
99 on April 12, 1965; following in his father's footsteps, he joined
1010 the United States Navy, and he worked as a submarine electronics
1111 technician for nearly eight years; during that time, he met his
1212 future wife, Stephanie, who was also serving in the Navy; and
1313 WHEREAS, Officer Abernethy graduated from the Houston Police
1414 Academy in 1997 and quickly began to distinguish himself through
1515 his commitment and professionalism; he served on the Houston Police
1616 Department's dive team, bike patrol, and gang unit and earned two
1717 HPD Life Saving Awards; he completed his bachelor's degree while
1818 serving the department, and in summer 2008, he was accepted for bomb
1919 squad training; demonstrating an outstanding work ethic, he put in
2020 many extra hours back at his desk after each day he spent in
2121 training sessions; moreover, he also shared his time as a board
2222 member for the Houston Police Officers Union; and
2323 WHEREAS, Known for his quiet faith and courtesy to the
2424 public, Officer Abernethy led by example; he was devoted to his
2525 family and loved to talk about his daughter, Olivia, a graduate of
2626 Texas A&M University, and his son, Timothy, who joined the U.S.
2727 Navy; fellow officers admired his courage and integrity and enjoyed
2828 the sly wit that lay beneath his solemn manner; and
2929 WHEREAS, Tim Abernethy was an exceptional police officer who
3030 set and achieved the highest standards, and he will be remembered
3131 not only for his great sacrifice, but for the way he lived each day
3232 in service to others; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3434 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Officer Timothy Scott
3535 Abernethy and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
3636 to his wife, Stephanie Abernethy; to his daughter, Olivia Ann
3737 Abernethy; to his son, Timothy Scott Abernethy, Jr.; to his
3838 parents, Charles and Margaret Abernethy; to his sisters, Evelyn
3939 Campbell and her husband, Doug, and Margaret Ann Salazar and her
4040 husband, Pete; to his brothers, Brian Abernethy, David Abernethy
4141 and his wife, Ganjana, and Phillip Abernethy and his wife, Carrie;
4242 and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4444 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4545 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Tim
4646 Abernethy.
