5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Words fail to adequately express the sorrow felt at |

6 | 6 | | the untimely loss of Michael Snow Stevens of Houston, who passed |
---|
7 | 7 | | away on May 24, 2008, at the age of 58; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Michael Stevens was born on November 2, 1949, to |
---|
9 | 9 | | Darrell and Marianne Stevens; after graduating from Robert E. Lee |
---|
10 | 10 | | High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in business |
---|
11 | 11 | | administration from the University of Houston in 1973; answering |
---|
12 | 12 | | his nation's call to service, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In his professional life, Mr. Stevens earned a |
---|
14 | 14 | | reputation as a skilled businessman, and the company he created, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Michael Stevens Interests, Inc., acquired and managed more than 80 |
---|
16 | 16 | | real estate projects; through his involvement in both commercial |
---|
17 | 17 | | and nonprofit ventures at the local level, he helped advance the |
---|
18 | 18 | | revitalization of downtown Houston, and he oversaw the financing |
---|
19 | 19 | | and development of many important multimillion-dollar projects, |
---|
20 | 20 | | including the Hilton Americas Convention Hotel, the Houston Astros' |
---|
21 | 21 | | Minute Maid Park, and the Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Stevens also played a central role in the |
---|
23 | 23 | | creation of Homes for Houston, an initiative that led to the |
---|
24 | 24 | | construction or improvement of some 20,000 units of affordable |
---|
25 | 25 | | housing, and he was appointed as Houston's first assistant to the |
---|
26 | 26 | | mayor for housing and inner city revitalization, a position for |
---|
27 | 27 | | which he collected the nominal annual salary of one dollar; as chair |
---|
28 | 28 | | of the Building and Interiors Committee at the Baylor College of |
---|
29 | 29 | | Medicine, he was instrumental in the construction of many new |
---|
30 | 30 | | campus buildings, including a one-million-square-foot hospital and |
---|
31 | 31 | | clinic; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, This community-minded developer also shared his |
---|
33 | 33 | | expertise in transportation issues through his service as chair of |
---|
34 | 34 | | the Transportation Task Force of the Governor's Business Council, |
---|
35 | 35 | | as vice chair of the Greater Houston Partnership Transportation and |
---|
36 | 36 | | Infrastructure Advisory Committee, and as a member of many other |
---|
37 | 37 | | state and local transportation committees; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Michael Stevens enjoyed the |
---|
39 | 39 | | love and support of his wife, Kim, with whom he enjoyed 34 years of |
---|
40 | 40 | | marriage, and he took great joy in the active role he played in the |
---|
41 | 41 | | lives of three grandchildren, Grace Noel, Anthony Michael, and |
---|
42 | 42 | | Kassidy Ann; he also found great comfort in his faith, serving as a |
---|
43 | 43 | | deacon for Second Baptist Church and chairing both the church's |
---|
44 | 44 | | Centurion Foundation and its Woodway Campus Building Committee; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, A generous and accomplished man committed to the |
---|
46 | 46 | | betterment and continued prosperity of his community, Michael |
---|
47 | 47 | | Stevens shared his zest for life with all who had the good fortune |
---|
48 | 48 | | to know him, and he leaves behind a legacy that will long resonate |
---|
49 | 49 | | in the city he loved; now, therefore, be it |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
51 | 51 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Michael Snow Stevens |
---|
52 | 52 | | and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |
---|
53 | 53 | | wife, Kim Stevens; to his grandchildren, Grace Noel, Anthony |

54 | 54 | | Michael, and Kassidy Ann MacKenzie; to his brother, Vance Stevens, |

55 | 55 | | and his wife, Bobbie, and their two children, Glenn and Dusty; to |
