44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Words fail to adequately express the sorrow felt at
66 the untimely loss of Michael Snow Stevens of Houston, who passed
77 away on May 24, 2008, at the age of 58; and
88 WHEREAS, Michael Stevens was born on November 2, 1949, to
99 Darrell and Marianne Stevens; after graduating from Robert E. Lee
1010 High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in business
1111 administration from the University of Houston in 1973; answering
1212 his nation's call to service, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps; and
1313 WHEREAS, In his professional life, Mr. Stevens earned a
1414 reputation as a skilled businessman, and the company he created,
1515 Michael Stevens Interests, Inc., acquired and managed more than 80
1616 real estate projects; through his involvement in both commercial
1717 and nonprofit ventures at the local level, he helped advance the
1818 revitalization of downtown Houston, and he oversaw the financing
1919 and development of many important multimillion-dollar projects,
2020 including the Hilton Americas Convention Hotel, the Houston Astros'
2121 Minute Maid Park, and the Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Stevens also played a central role in the
2323 creation of Homes for Houston, an initiative that led to the
2424 construction or improvement of some 20,000 units of affordable
2525 housing, and he was appointed as Houston's first assistant to the
2626 mayor for housing and inner city revitalization, a position for
2727 which he collected the nominal annual salary of one dollar; as chair
2828 of the Building and Interiors Committee at the Baylor College of
2929 Medicine, he was instrumental in the construction of many new
3030 campus buildings, including a one-million-square-foot hospital and
3131 clinic; and
3232 WHEREAS, This community-minded developer also shared his
3333 expertise in transportation issues through his service as chair of
3434 the Transportation Task Force of the Governor's Business Council,
3535 as vice chair of the Greater Houston Partnership Transportation and
3636 Infrastructure Advisory Committee, and as a member of many other
3737 state and local transportation committees; and
3838 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Michael Stevens enjoyed the
3939 love and support of his wife, Kim, with whom he enjoyed 34 years of
4040 marriage, and he took great joy in the active role he played in the
4141 lives of three grandchildren, Grace Noel, Anthony Michael, and
4242 Kassidy Ann; he also found great comfort in his faith, serving as a
4343 deacon for Second Baptist Church and chairing both the church's
4444 Centurion Foundation and its Woodway Campus Building Committee; and
4545 WHEREAS, A generous and accomplished man committed to the
4646 betterment and continued prosperity of his community, Michael
4747 Stevens shared his zest for life with all who had the good fortune
4848 to know him, and he leaves behind a legacy that will long resonate
4949 in the city he loved; now, therefore, be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5151 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Michael Snow Stevens
5252 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
5353 wife, Kim Stevens; to his grandchildren, Grace Noel, Anthony
5454 Michael, and Kassidy Ann MacKenzie; to his brother, Vance Stevens,
5555 and his wife, Bobbie, and their two children, Glenn and Dusty; to
5656 his sister, Leslie MacClean, and her husband, Chris, and their two
5757 children, Warren and Emily MacClean; to his sister-in-law, Linda K.
5858 Stevens; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it
5959 further
6060 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6161 prepared for his family, and that when the Texas House of
6262 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Michael
6363 Stevens.
