| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Among the great resources of the State of Texas is |

| 6 | 6 | | the artistic talent and creativity of its citizens, and hundreds of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | young artists are visiting Austin on March 9-10, 2009, in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | celebration of Arts Education Days at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, More than 1.3 million middle and high school |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | students in Texas are enrolled in fine arts courses, and over 2.3 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | million elementary school students are receiving fine arts |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | instruction, with more than 10,000 creative men and women teaching |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the classes; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Visual art, music, theater, and dance offer |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | outstanding opportunities for self-expression, and early exposure |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | to the arts through educational programs greatly increases the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | quality of a child's education; studies have found that students |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | who participate in fine arts courses in school not only perform |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | better in other academic courses, but also achieve higher scores on |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | standardized tests; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Fine arts courses promote innovative thinking, a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | skill that is essential to succeed in college and the 21st century |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | workforce, and they further provide unique lessons in the cultures |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of the world; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Hundreds of students from around the state are |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | visiting the Capitol to share their talents through performances |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and displays in celebration of Arts Education Days at the Capitol; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The contributions that artists have made to the Lone |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Star State are myriad, and it is indeed fitting to take this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | opportunity to pay tribute to Texas art students and their teachers |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | and to wish them well in all of their endeavors; now, therefore, be |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 9-10, 2009, as Arts Education |
