| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Hewitt are gathering in Austin on March |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 11, 2009, to celebrate Hewitt Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Hewitt was first established in 1882 as a station on |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad; in 1893, John Allison |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Warren bought the township around the station and named it after |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | George A. Hewitt, a director of the Katy Railroad; he named the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | town's first street Warren, and the second street Johnson, his |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | wife's maiden name; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, For years, Hewitt was a thriving farming community; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | corn, cattle, and cotton were grown on the rich Blackland Prairie |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | nearby and then shipped by rail or by wagon to market from Hewitt; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The town was incorporated in 1960, and the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | population began to grow as people who worked in nearby Waco bought |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | homes there; during the 1980s, Hewitt was the fastest-growing town |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | in McLennan County, and it remains the second largest community in |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the county; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Today, Hewitt continues to grow and thrive; in 2007, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | it was named one of the top 100 places to live in the United States |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | by Money magazine, recognized for its economic opportunity, good |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | schools, safe streets, things to do, and real sense of community; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their past even as they look forward to |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | a bright future, the people of Hewitt may take great pride in the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | charm and vitality of their unique community; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 11, 2009, as Hewitt Day at the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | State Capitol and extend to the delegation sincere best wishes for a |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | productive and enjoyable visit to Austin. |
