55 WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Kingsville are gathering in Austin
66 on March 11, 2009, to celebrate Kingsville Day at the State Capitol;
77 and
88 WHEREAS, Founded on Independence Day 1905, Kingsville is home
99 to the world-famous King Ranch, which helped develop the Santa
1010 Gertrudis cattle breed and has long been a prominent supplier of
1111 quarter horses; moreover, the ranch was the home of Triple Crown
1212 winner Assault and has been a leader in agriculture for more than
1313 150 years; and
1414 WHEREAS, An important regional center for education, the city
1515 is the site of Texas A&M University--Kingsville, which includes the
1616 Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary
1717 Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife
1818 Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy;
1919 among its many achievements, the university has claimed seven
2020 college football national championships and developed the Star Ruby
2121 variety of red grapefruit, and it has been the flagship of higher
2222 education in South Texas since 1925; and
2323 WHEREAS, Naval Air Station Kingsville is home to the premier
2424 undergraduate pilot training facility in the United States, which
2525 prepares U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots for their key role in
2626 national defense; and
2727 WHEREAS, Kingsville has volunteered its sons and daughters to
2828 take part in every major military conflict fought by the U.S. in the
2929 past 100 years; the city's roll call of esteemed veterans includes
3030 General Dickie Cavazos, the first four-star general of Mexican
3131 American descent in the United States Army; and
3232 WHEREAS, Today, this notable South Texas city, along with the
3333 rest of Kleberg County and neighboring Kenedy County, is a place of
3434 diversified industries; supported by multiple energy sources,
3535 including oil, gas, nuclear, wind, and solar generating facilities,
3636 the economy of the Kingsville area has continued to grow; this has
3737 resulted in new jobs, increased construction, and an improved
3838 quality of life for its citizens; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4040 Legislature hereby recognize March 11, 2009, as Kingsville Day at
4141 the State Capitol and commend area residents for the countless
4242 contributions they have made to the development of the region,
4343 state, and country.
