| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The many contributions of Bessie M. Swindle to the |

| 6 | 6 | | city of Houston are being recognized with the dedication of the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Bessie Swindle Community Center on March 21, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, For more than 30 years, Bessie Swindle has used her |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | skills as a community organizer to make a difference in Houston; in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 1985, she founded and served as president of the Cloverland Civic |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Club, representing 400 homeowners in the neighborhood, sponsoring |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | fund-raisers, aiding needy families, and raising money for |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | scholarships; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Since 1994, she has been president of the Southeast |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Coalition of Civic Clubs, promoting community awareness, and more |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | recently, she was appointed outreach coordinator for Congressman Al |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Green of the Ninth District; she has also served as community |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | liaison for the constable's office in Precinct 7 and as a troop |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | leader for the San Jacinto Council of the Girl Scouts of America; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | since 1969, Ms. Swindle has been an active member and volunteer at |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, This energetic and compassionate citizen has earned |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | many awards and recognitions for her work over the years, including |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Parent of the Year from James H. Law Elementary in 1975, the Mayor's |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1996, the Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislative Black Caucus Award in 1999, and the Sir Knight Dennis |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Armelin Humanitarian Award in 2004, among others; in 2007, the City |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of Houston honored her with Bessie M. Swindle Day and Partnership of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Service Day; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Formerly the Cloverland Community Center, the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Bessie Swindle Community Center is being renamed in Ms. Swindle's |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | honor by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | occasion offers a fine opportunity to pay tribute to this esteemed |

| 34 | 34 | | community leader; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the Bessie Swindle |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Community Center and recognize Ms. Swindle for her many good works; |
