| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Citizens from La Joya and McAllen who are members of |

| 6 | 6 | | the Texas affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers are |

| 7 | 7 | | visiting the State Capitol on March 16, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Chartered in 1974, Texas AFT represents more than |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 61,000 teachers, counselors, librarians, custodians, and other |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | non-administrative school employees across the Lone Star State; a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | leader in the areas of salary and health insurance improvements and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | teacher certification, Texas AFT is also recognized for the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | implementation of a statewide leadership development program that |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | has become the model for other state federations; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The members of Texas AFT work to create a supportive |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | environment conducive to learning and to ensure equal opportunity |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | for all students through a strong system of public schools; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The union also strives to raise the standards of all |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the professions employed in the schools and to secure working |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | conditions that will enable the various staff members represented |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | to render the best possible service; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The members of Texas AFT believe that a vigorous |

| 23 | 23 | | system of public schools is essential to preserving the liberties |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and the robust, representative form of government that have so long |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | made this country a beacon for all the world, and they are to be |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | commended for their steadfast advocacy in behalf of the public |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | schools, their students, and their employees; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby welcome the members of Texas AFT who are |

| 30 | 30 | | visiting the State Capitol from La Joya and McAllen and extend to |
