44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of League City are marking the centennial
66 of the Butler Building, the oldest brick structure on the mainland
77 of Galveston County; and
88 WHEREAS, Completed in 1909, the Butler Building was
99 constructed by George Washington Butler, who came to the area with
1010 his pioneer family as a child in the mid-19th century; after the
1111 Civil War, Mr. Butler became a prominent cattleman, and went on to
1212 serve as Galveston County commissioner and as postmaster for the
1313 community first known as Butler's Ranch or Clear Creek; in
1414 addition, Mr. Butler built the first school, housed in a log cabin,
1515 and was instrumental in the development of the bridge that joined
1616 Galveston with the mainland; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Butler convinced Galveston financier John
1818 League to buy land near the Butler home and plat streets for the
1919 town that would be renamed League City; Mr. Butler also worked to
2020 bring a bank to the community, promising the Galveston firm of
2121 Hutchins and Sealy that he would construct a first-class facility;
2222 designed by architect Andrew Dow, the L-shaped Butler Building
2323 initially housed the Citizen's State Bank, a drug store, a hardware
2424 store, and professional offices; and
2525 WHEREAS, In later years, the Butler Building fell into
2626 disrepair, until it was purchased and renovated by a local
2727 architect; today, the elegant building again houses professional
2828 offices, as well as Butler's Courtyard, an award-winning special
2929 event facility that has hosted more than 500 weddings since 2003;
3030 the League City Historical Society has recognized the building with
3131 a historic medallion; and
3232 WHEREAS, The Butler Building holds a special place in the
3333 chronicles of League City, and in its 100th year, it continues to
3434 bring vitality to the historic center of town; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3636 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
3737 construction of the Butler Building in League City and extend best
3838 wishes to all those associated with the preservation of this
3939 venerable edifice.
