| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of League City are marking the centennial |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | of the Butler Building, the oldest brick structure on the mainland |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of Galveston County; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Completed in 1909, the Butler Building was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | constructed by George Washington Butler, who came to the area with |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | his pioneer family as a child in the mid-19th century; after the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Civil War, Mr. Butler became a prominent cattleman, and went on to |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | serve as Galveston County commissioner and as postmaster for the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | community first known as Butler's Ranch or Clear Creek; in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | addition, Mr. Butler built the first school, housed in a log cabin, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and was instrumental in the development of the bridge that joined |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Galveston with the mainland; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Butler convinced Galveston financier John |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | League to buy land near the Butler home and plat streets for the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | town that would be renamed League City; Mr. Butler also worked to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | bring a bank to the community, promising the Galveston firm of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Hutchins and Sealy that he would construct a first-class facility; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | designed by architect Andrew Dow, the L-shaped Butler Building |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | initially housed the Citizen's State Bank, a drug store, a hardware |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | store, and professional offices; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In later years, the Butler Building fell into |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | disrepair, until it was purchased and renovated by a local |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | architect; today, the elegant building again houses professional |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | offices, as well as Butler's Courtyard, an award-winning special |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | event facility that has hosted more than 500 weddings since 2003; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the League City Historical Society has recognized the building with |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | a historic medallion; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The Butler Building holds a special place in the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | chronicles of League City, and in its 100th year, it continues to |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | bring vitality to the historic center of town; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | construction of the Butler Building in League City and extend best |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | wishes to all those associated with the preservation of this |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | venerable edifice. |
