55 WHEREAS, The Benefit Pow Wow in Pasadena brings together
66 Native American peoples in the Houston area every month for a
77 celebration of their rich cultures, proud heritage, and deep
88 spiritual roots; and
99 WHEREAS, Texas has the fourth-largest population of Native
1010 Americans in the nation, and the pow wow provides a fine opportunity
1111 for Houston's Indians to share their history and beliefs with the
1212 general public and to pass their traditions to a new generation; and
1313 WHEREAS, Sponsored by a new organization, United American
1414 Indian Tribes Houston, the monthly pow wow features ceremonial
1515 dances performed by members of various tribes in their traditional
1616 regalia; the event is open to anyone, and participants and visitors
1717 may also sample traditional foods and crafts; and
1818 WHEREAS, The Benefit Pow Wow plays an important role in
1919 maintaining the cultural vitality of the native peoples of Texas
2020 and contributes greatly to the robust diversity of the Lone Star
2121 State; now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2323 Legislature hereby recognize the monthly Benefit Pow Wow of United
2424 American Indian Tribes Houston and commend the event's organizers
2525 and participants for honoring traditions of Native American
2626 cultures; and, be it further
2727 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2828 prepared for United American Indian Tribes Houston as an expression
2929 of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
