| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Andrew |

| 6 | 6 | | Jackson Elementary School in McAllen; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Since it first opened its doors in 1959, Andrew |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Jackson Elementary has sought to provide a safe and nurturing |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | environment in which the staff are committed to instruction that is |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | flexible, child-centered, and relevant to the real world; this |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | noteworthy institution has built a strong educational foundation |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | for generations of McAllen residents, including NASA astronaut |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Michael Fossum, and it continues to empower its students to become |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | responsible citizens, with the support of staff, parents, and the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | community; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Today, Andrew Jackson Elementary serves nearly 800 |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | students enrolled in kindergarten through the fifth grade under the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | skilled leadership of principal Joe A. Garza, and its mascot is the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | jaguar; the school is guided by the motto, "Parents Plus Students |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Plus Staff Equals a Winning Combination"; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Andrew Jackson Elementary has earned numerous |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | accolades for maintaining high academic standards, including the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Governor's Excellence in Education Award, which was based on |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | student performance in 2007 and 2008; in addition, the school has |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | obtained a "Recognized" rating from the Texas Education Agency for |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the past four years, and it received TEA Gold Performance |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Acknowledgments in science, math, and writing in 2008; moreover, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Andrew Jackson Elementary was selected to participate in an ongoing |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | state pilot study on effective reading strategies as a Reading |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | First Campus; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, The education of young Texans is a vital enterprise |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | for every school in our state, and Andrew Jackson Elementary has |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | dedicated itself to that worthy goal for half a century; now, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Andrew |

| 37 | 37 | | Jackson Elementary School and extend to its teachers, students, and |

| 38 | 38 | | staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
