H.R. No. 835 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Words cannot diminish the pain of a young life ended too soon, and it is with great sadness that we join the family and friends of Charles Knox Alford in mourning his passing on February 13, 2009, at the age of 16; and WHEREAS, Born in Houston on November 30, 1992, Mr. Alford was the son of Mary and Gene Alford; he was a sophomore at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston and previously attended Annunciation Orthodox School from preschool through eighth grade; passionate about lacrosse, he was an enthusiastic member of the Strake team; Mr. Alford also sang in the choir and was a proud member of the engineering club, serving on the team that recently won a statewide engineering competition; and WHEREAS, Mr. Alford demonstrated great maturity and kindness after his father was paralyzed in a tractor accident and assisted him in every way; in addition, this uncommonly selfless teenager exemplified the principles of his faith by participating annually in two summer mission trips with First Presbyterian Church of Houston, where he was a valued member; and WHEREAS, A Life Scout in Troop #55 of the Boy Scouts of America, Mr. Alford was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and other outdoor activities with his family; his warm manner and upbeat, exuberant personality endeared him to friends, who fondly called him "Chico," and to his loving family members, who gave him the nickname "Charlie Bear"; and WHEREAS, Charles Alford will be profoundly missed, but those who held him dear may find comfort in the memory of his remarkable generosity and unwavering devotion, which have inspired so many people; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Charles Knox Alford and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his parents, Mary and Gene Alford; to his brother and sister, John and Bess; to his grandparents, Annette and John Long and Phyllis and Landon Alford; to Norma Salmon, who helped care for him since his infancy; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charles Knox Alford.
