 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Hailey Hodgkiss of Irving has been named a
 Distinguished Finalist by the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community
 Awards program, becoming one of only 10 finalists in the State of
 Texas; and
 WHEREAS, Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National
 Association of Secondary School Principals, the Spirit of Community
 Awards honor young people in middle school and high school for
 outstanding volunteer service; students are chosen at the local,
 state, and national levels, and more than 80,000 young volunteers
 have been honored in the 13 years of the program; and
 WHEREAS, A 16-year-old sophomore at Irving High School,
 Ms. Hodgkiss collected money and products to create gift bags for
 teenage cancer patients at a local hospital; having undergone
 lengthy treatments for leukemia herself, Ms. Hodgkiss understood
 the boredom and despair often felt by a young person with cancer;
 the gift bags included soft caps crocheted by Ms. Hodgkiss as well
 as games, pillow cases, gift cards, and other personal items
 intended to bolster a young patient's spirits; and
 WHEREAS, This compassionate young woman has demonstrated
 great initiative and determination in pursuit of a selfless goal,
 and she is an inspiration to all who know her; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Hailey Hodgkiss on being named a
 Distinguished Finalist by the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community
 Awards program and extend to her sincere best wishes for a bright
 future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Ms. Hodgkiss as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
