44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, For 100 years, the people of Texas have benefited
66 from the outstanding materials and resources of the Texas State
77 Library and Archives Commission; and
88 WHEREAS, On March 19, 1909, a bill was signed into law by
99 Governor Thomas M. Campbell that officially established the
1010 commission for the purpose of aiding and encouraging public
1111 libraries and collecting materials related to Texas history; in
1212 addition to books, the agency houses thousands of government
1313 records, private papers, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and other
1414 materials that document the history and cultural heritage of the
1515 state; and
1616 WHEREAS, Under the leadership of its director, Peggy D. Rudd,
1717 the agency conducts its important work through five major divisions
1818 and programs; the archives and information services division
1919 collects and preserves valuable government records and provides
2020 reference services for the Texas State Archives, the Genealogy
2121 Collection, and the Reference/Documents Collection; the agency's
2222 library development division supports the 540 public libraries and
2323 10 regional public library systems across the state and provides
2424 continuing education to library professionals; the library
2525 resource sharing division oversees services that provide
2626 information and library materials through networks of Texas
2727 libraries and through Internet resources such as TexShare and
2828 TexNet Interlibrary Loan; the state and local records management
2929 division supports Texas state agencies and local governments in
3030 their efforts to comply with records management laws and provides
3131 training and consulting services to nearly 9,000 Texas local
3232 governments; TSLAC is further distinguished by the Talking Book
3333 Program, which provides thousands of Texans who are unable to read
3434 standard print with free access to more than 80,000 titles in audio,
3535 large print, and Braille formats; and
3636 WHEREAS, The agency's home since the early 1960s, the Lorenzo
3737 de Zavala State Archives and Library Building, is currently
3838 undergoing a $15.5 million renovation to update its infrastructure
3939 and to improve the quality of public and staff spaces; moreover, a
4040 capital campaign is under way to fund an additional $10 million for
4141 specialized library and conservation equipment, as well as for
4242 compact archival shelving that will allow the library to
4343 accommodate its growing archival collection; and
4444 WHEREAS, TSLAC headquarters are augmented by the Sam Houston
4545 Regional Library and Research Center in Liberty on a site donated by
4646 former governor Price Daniel and his wife, Jean; the center
4747 features exhibits on a variety of Southeast Texas topics and houses
4848 a number of special collections; and
4949 WHEREAS, Since its founding, the Texas State Library and
5050 Archives Commission has upheld its mission to safeguard and make
5151 accessible historically significant records and resources and to
5252 provide information services that inspire and support research,
5353 education, and reading, and it is indeed fitting to honor this
5454 venerable institution for a century of service to the Lone Star
5555 State; now, therefore, be it
5656 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5757 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Texas
5858 State Library and Archives Commission and extend sincere best
5959 wishes for continued success to the agency's commissioners and
6060 staff; and, be it further
6161 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6262 prepared for the Texas State Library and Archives Commission as an
6363 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
