5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, April 3, 2009, marks the sixth annual observance of |

6 | 6 | | National Walk to Work Day, and the city of Edinburg will celebrate |
---|
7 | 7 | | this occasion with its Healthy Living Festival and the kickoff to |
---|
8 | 8 | | its Walk or Bike to Work and School Week; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Endorsed by the United States Department of Health |
---|
10 | 10 | | and Human Services, National Walk to Work Day reminds Americans of |
---|
11 | 11 | | the many benefits of commuting on foot; walking saves money and gas, |
---|
12 | 12 | | a finite natural resource; it also reduces traffic congestion and |
---|
13 | 13 | | greenhouse gas emissions; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Walking is an excellent form of exercise that |
---|
15 | 15 | | strengthens the cardiovascular system, helps manage weight, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and |
---|
17 | 17 | | other chronic illnesses; walking also has beneficial effects on |
---|
18 | 18 | | mood and sleep; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Sponsored by the city of Edinburg, the Edinburg |
---|
20 | 20 | | Environment Advisory Board, the Edinburg Cool Cities team, and Los |
---|
21 | 21 | | Caminos del Rio, the Healthy Living Festival is bringing together |
---|
22 | 22 | | public and private organizations to promote walking and bicycling, |
---|
23 | 23 | | and to support improvements in the quality of life and |
---|
24 | 24 | | sustainability of the community, as well as in the overall health of |
---|
25 | 25 | | its citizens; the event will highlight the pedestrian and bicycling |
---|
26 | 26 | | facilities that are available to residents, including bike lanes |
---|
27 | 27 | | and hike and bike trails; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Edinburg adopted the U.S. Conference of Mayors |
---|
29 | 29 | | Climate Protection Agreement in 2008 and is working to address such |
---|
30 | 30 | | key goals as creating a compact, walkable urban community and |
---|
31 | 31 | | promoting alternatives to automotive transportation; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Walking to work offers numerous financial, |
---|
33 | 33 | | environmental, and health benefits, and National Walk to Work Day |
---|
34 | 34 | | and Edinburg's Walk or Bike to Work and School Week are helping make |
---|
35 | 35 | | Texans more aware of these important advantages; now, therefore, be |
---|

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 3, 2009, as National Walk to |

39 | 39 | | Work Day and recognize the week of April 3-10, 2009, as Walk or Bike |

40 | 40 | | to Work and School Week in Edinburg and congratulate all those who |
