55 WHEREAS, April 3, 2009, marks the sixth annual observance of
66 National Walk to Work Day, and the city of Edinburg will celebrate
77 this occasion with its Healthy Living Festival and the kickoff to
88 its Walk or Bike to Work and School Week; and
99 WHEREAS, Endorsed by the United States Department of Health
1010 and Human Services, National Walk to Work Day reminds Americans of
1111 the many benefits of commuting on foot; walking saves money and gas,
1212 a finite natural resource; it also reduces traffic congestion and
1313 greenhouse gas emissions; and
1414 WHEREAS, Walking is an excellent form of exercise that
1515 strengthens the cardiovascular system, helps manage weight, and
1616 lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and
1717 other chronic illnesses; walking also has beneficial effects on
1818 mood and sleep; and
1919 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the city of Edinburg, the Edinburg
2020 Environment Advisory Board, the Edinburg Cool Cities team, and Los
2121 Caminos del Rio, the Healthy Living Festival is bringing together
2222 public and private organizations to promote walking and bicycling,
2323 and to support improvements in the quality of life and
2424 sustainability of the community, as well as in the overall health of
2525 its citizens; the event will highlight the pedestrian and bicycling
2626 facilities that are available to residents, including bike lanes
2727 and hike and bike trails; and
2828 WHEREAS, Edinburg adopted the U.S. Conference of Mayors
2929 Climate Protection Agreement in 2008 and is working to address such
3030 key goals as creating a compact, walkable urban community and
3131 promoting alternatives to automotive transportation; and
3232 WHEREAS, Walking to work offers numerous financial,
3333 environmental, and health benefits, and National Walk to Work Day
3434 and Edinburg's Walk or Bike to Work and School Week are helping make
3535 Texans more aware of these important advantages; now, therefore, be
3636 it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3838 Legislature hereby recognize April 3, 2009, as National Walk to
3939 Work Day and recognize the week of April 3-10, 2009, as Walk or Bike
4040 to Work and School Week in Edinburg and congratulate all those who
4141 are enjoying a healthier commute.
