| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The fine Texas actor Valente Rodriguez has achieved |

| 6 | 6 | | great distinction on film, television, and the stage, and he has |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | generously shared his success with the community of the Rio Grande |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Valley by returning recently to work with theater, film, and TV |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | students at his alma mater; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in Edcouch, Mr. Rodriguez was the first member |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | of his family to graduate from high school and attend college; at |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | The University of Texas--Pan American, he performed in more than 30 |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | theatrical productions and earned the national Irene Ryan Award |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | three times, and in 1985, he appeared in UTPA's first student film, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | The Scourging Word; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Rodriguez moved to Los Angeles in 1988 to pursue |

| 17 | 17 | | an acting career; as a member of the Latino Theater Lab at the Los |

| 18 | 18 | | Angeles Theater Center, he appeared in productions of classic works |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | by Gogol and Arthur Miller, as well as a number of contemporary |

| 20 | 20 | | plays; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In the world of film, Mr. Rodriguez has performed in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | such productions as Salsa, Erin Brokovich, Volcano, and Bound by |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Honor; on television, he has had roles in ER, The X-Files, The |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Golden Girls, and Beverly Hills 90210, and he has achieved lasting |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | fame by playing the role of "Ernie" for five years on the popular |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | sitcom, George Lopez; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Rodriguez has also cowritten, coproduced, and |

| 28 | 28 | | performed in Riffs of Shakespeare, a bilingual theater piece, and |

| 29 | 29 | | he is the cowriter of several Latino Theater Lab productions; and |

| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In the summer of 2008, Mr. Rodriguez returned to the |

| 31 | 31 | | Rio Grande Valley to play a leading role in The Red Queen, a film |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | produced by UTPA students, generously passing along his experience |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | and expertise to a new generation of Texas performers and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | filmmakers; and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Young artists benefit greatly from the |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | encouragement and mentoring of more experienced performers, and |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Valente Rodriguez has played a vital role in the professional |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | achievements and personal triumphs of many talented Texans; now, |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commend Valente Rodriguez for his contributions |
