| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Cross United Church of Christ in Seguin celebrated |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | its 100th anniversary on February 28, 2009; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The assembly was first organized on March 28, 1909, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | as a German-speaking alternative to the local Methodist services |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | delivered in English; the initial service was pastored by the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Reverend Joseph Jaworski and attended by 18 people, who passed a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | constitution establishing the congregation; the first permanent |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | home for Cross United was built in 1913, and services there |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | continued to be conducted in German until around 1930, when the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | church converted to English; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the membership has benefited from |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the dedicated efforts of many outstanding spiritual leaders, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | including the Reverend James Price, who leads the congregation |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | today; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The current Cross United Church of Christ building |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | was dedicated in 1969 and is home to a community of faith that |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | includes more than 350 members; the congregants participate in a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | range of worthy programs, including those benefiting the Guadalupe |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Valley Family Violence Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, and the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Children's Advocacy Center of Comal County; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, Cross United Church of Christ |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | has served as a source of inspiration and fellowship for those who |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | worship there, and its continued existence is a tribute to the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | unwavering commitment of its members, both past and present; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of Cross United |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Church of Christ in Seguin and extend to the congregation sincere |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
