5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Bessie F. Chisum of Beaumont has served her |
---|
6 | 6 | | community for more than three decades, and it is indeed a pleasure |
---|
7 | 7 | | to recognize her for her outstanding civic contributions; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of the Mississippi Delta, Bessie Chisum |
---|
9 | 9 | | earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and a |
---|
10 | 10 | | master's degree from Louisiana State University; she went on to |
---|
11 | 11 | | teach Spanish, speech, and English in her home state, and she later |
---|
12 | 12 | | worked in the health insurance industry; in 1976, she and her |
---|
13 | 13 | | husband, Stewart, relocated to Beaumont, where she launched Chisum |
---|
14 | 14 | | Resource Management, a consulting firm specializing in leadership |
---|
15 | 15 | | development, strategic planning, and human resources; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Chisum began working with Leadership Southeast |
---|
17 | 17 | | Texas in 1993 as a program consultant, and her devotion and hard |
---|
18 | 18 | | work have benefited the nonprofit organization in many ways; |
---|
19 | 19 | | currently serving as its executive director, she brings together |
---|
20 | 20 | | more than 50 leaders from throughout Southeast Texas every year to |
---|
21 | 21 | | advance the program's goals of educating its participants on the |
---|
22 | 22 | | complex issues facing the area, addressing economic development, |
---|
23 | 23 | | and fostering regional unity; a graduate of Leadership Beaumont and |
---|
24 | 24 | | Leadership Texas, Mrs. Chisum has also helped create an active |
---|
25 | 25 | | alumni organization, and she instituted Leadership Southeast Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | Day at the State Capitol; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Chisum has further contributed to numerous |
---|
28 | 28 | | community organizations, serving on the boards of the Beaumont |
---|
29 | 29 | | Public Schools Foundation, the Beaumont Community Development |
---|
30 | 30 | | Block Grant Citizens Advisory Committee, the local chapter of the |
---|
31 | 31 | | Texas Association of Business, Junior Achievement of Southeast |
---|
32 | 32 | | Texas, the Edison Museum, and the Julie Rogers "Gift of Life" |
---|
33 | 33 | | program; in addition, Mrs. Chisum is a former president of Beaumont |
---|
34 | 34 | | Main Street, the Beaumont Historical Landmark Commission, the Art |
---|
35 | 35 | | Museum of Southeast Texas, and the Association of Texas Leadership |
---|
36 | 36 | | Programs; she was board chair of the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce |
---|
37 | 37 | | and has received such accolades from the group as the Athena Award |
---|
38 | 38 | | and the Volunteer of the Year designation; she is also an active |
---|
39 | 39 | | member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont and a Paul Harris fellow; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, A distinguished civic leader, Bessie Chisum has |
---|
41 | 41 | | garnered the lasting respect and admiration of her fellow citizens, |
---|
42 | 42 | | and she may indeed reflect with great pride on the positive impact |
---|
43 | 43 | | she has had on her community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature hereby honor Bessie F. Chisum for her dedicated public |
---|
46 | 46 | | service and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success |
---|
47 | 47 | | and happiness; and, be it further |
