| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The life of Fort Worth resident Bessie Reed has |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | spanned the entirety of the 20th century and is continuing into the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 21st, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor this remarkable woman; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The granddaughter of a slave, Bessie Reed was born |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | December 19, 1900; she attended segregated schools as a child and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | taught herself to read; she has worked as a farmer, housekeeper, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | seamstress, and she lived in Seattle before relocating with her |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | daughter to Fort Worth in 1996; today, Mrs. Reed enjoys the company |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of her niece, Mrs. Dudley, and a treasured family that includes one |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | grandchild and one great-great-grandson, and she takes pleasure in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | reading from her Bible daily; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Over the past 108 years, Mrs. Reed has witnessed |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | major developments in technology and the first moon landing, as |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | well as two world wars, the Great Depression, and the tragedy of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | September 11, 2001; while her own mother, Lena Zumo, lived to be |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 101, Mrs. Reed never imagined that she would see an African American |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | elected president of the United States within her lifetime; she was |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | elated to cast her vote for Barack Obama, and she proudly watched as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | his victory was announced on television; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A kind and caring woman, Bessie Reed shares her |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | enthusiasm for living life to the fullest with all who meet her, and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | she serves as an inspiration to her fellow citizens in Fort Worth |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and beyond; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby recognize Bessie Reed as an extraordinary and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | cherished member of her community and extend to her sincere best |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 34 | 34 | | prepared for Mrs. Reed as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
