55 WHEREAS, The life of Fort Worth resident Bessie Reed has
66 spanned the entirety of the 20th century and is continuing into the
77 21st, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor this remarkable woman;

99 WHEREAS, The granddaughter of a slave, Bessie Reed was born
1010 December 19, 1900; she attended segregated schools as a child and
1111 taught herself to read; she has worked as a farmer, housekeeper, and
1212 seamstress, and she lived in Seattle before relocating with her
1313 daughter to Fort Worth in 1996; today, Mrs. Reed enjoys the company
1414 of her niece, Mrs. Dudley, and a treasured family that includes one
1515 grandchild and one great-great-grandson, and she takes pleasure in
1616 reading from her Bible daily; and
1717 WHEREAS, Over the past 108 years, Mrs. Reed has witnessed
1818 major developments in technology and the first moon landing, as
1919 well as two world wars, the Great Depression, and the tragedy of
2020 September 11, 2001; while her own mother, Lena Zumo, lived to be
2121 101, Mrs. Reed never imagined that she would see an African American
2222 elected president of the United States within her lifetime; she was
2323 elated to cast her vote for Barack Obama, and she proudly watched as
2424 his victory was announced on television; and
2525 WHEREAS, A kind and caring woman, Bessie Reed shares her
2626 enthusiasm for living life to the fullest with all who meet her, and
2727 she serves as an inspiration to her fellow citizens in Fort Worth
2828 and beyond; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3030 Legislature hereby recognize Bessie Reed as an extraordinary and
3131 cherished member of her community and extend to her sincere best
3232 wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3434 prepared for Mrs. Reed as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3535 House of Representatives.
