5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Through the efforts of the Healthy Nacogdoches |

6 | 6 | | Coalition, the city of Nacogdoches has won gold level recognition |
---|
7 | 7 | | from the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The council began its Heart and Stroke Healthy City |
---|
9 | 9 | | Recognition Program in 2003 to promote good heart health practices |
---|
10 | 10 | | by focusing on cities that implement beneficial policies and |
---|
11 | 11 | | activities; the program emphasizes proven interventions that |
---|
12 | 12 | | improve physical activity and eating habits, reduce tobacco use, |
---|
13 | 13 | | and decrease response time to heart attacks and strokes; in |
---|
14 | 14 | | conjunction with the Texas Department of State Health Services, the |
---|
15 | 15 | | council assesses such indicators as public information campaigns, |
---|
16 | 16 | | city smoking ordinances, and health programs and daily physical |
---|
17 | 17 | | activity in public schools; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Hosted by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, the |
---|
19 | 19 | | Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition brings together local businesses, |
---|
20 | 20 | | schools, health organizations, and others concerned about public |
---|
21 | 21 | | wellness; the year-old coalition has worked diligently to improve |
---|
22 | 22 | | heart health in the community and was instrumental in the adoption |
---|
23 | 23 | | of a municipal public smoking ban, which took effect in July 2008; |
---|
24 | 24 | | and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The coalition's numerous contributions include |
---|
26 | 26 | | increasing the safety of walking trails, promoting awareness of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Walk Across Texas campaign, raising the profile of the local |
---|
28 | 28 | | farmers market, and developing a guide for local restaurants to |
---|
29 | 29 | | highlight their healthy food choices; in achieving gold level |
---|
30 | 30 | | recognition, the city met all 40 criteria evaluated by the Texas |
---|
31 | 31 | | Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Lone Star State, and cardiovascular disease kills the third highest |
---|
34 | 34 | | number of Texans; by promoting citywide and countywide changes to |
---|
35 | 35 | | the health environment, the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition is |
---|
36 | 36 | | helping countless area residents lead longer, healthier lives; now, |
---|
37 | 37 | | therefore, be it |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition |

40 | 40 | | on winning gold level recognition for their city from the Texas |

41 | 41 | | Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke and extend to |
