81R13105 MMS-D By: Miller of Comal H.R. No. 880 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, General Michael W. Hagee, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), of Fredericksburg, has been appointed executive director of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation, effective January 5, 2009; and WHEREAS, A member of the foundation's board since 2007, General Hagee will play a vital role in advancing the work of that organization, which has supported the National Museum of the Pacific War since 1970; located on nine acres in Fredericksburg and operated under the auspices of the Texas Historical Commission, the museum is the only institution in the continental United States dedicated exclusively to telling the story of the Pacific theater battles of World War II; and WHEREAS, Born and raised in Fredericksburg, General Hagee joined the navy in 1963 and graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968; during a career of nearly four decades, he served as commanding general of the 1st Marine Division and the I Marine Expeditionary Force, as senior military assistant to the deputy secretary of defense, as executive assistant to the director of central intelligence, as deputy director of operations for the U.S. European Command, and as director of strategic plans and policy for the U.S. Pacific Command; he became the 33rd commandant of the marine corps in 2003 and served as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2004 until his retirement from the service in 2007; and WHEREAS, General Hagee's numerous military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with two palms, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two gold stars, the Bronze Star with Combat "V," and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; he has also received personal decorations from a number of foreign countries; and WHEREAS, This distinguished Texan holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, a master's degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and a master's degree in national security studies from the U.S. Naval War College; and WHEREAS, General Michael Hagee has rendered exceptional service to this country in both war and peace, and Texans are indeed fortunate that he is devoting his time and talents to furthering the mission of the National Museum of the Pacific War; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor General Michael W. Hagee, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), on his appointment as executive director of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for General Hagee as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
