44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A lifetime of meaningful judicial, legal, and
66 community service drew to a close with the passing of the Honorable
77 William S. Lott of Georgetown on February 11, 2009, at the age of
88 90; and
99 WHEREAS, Judge Lott presided over the 26th Judicial District
1010 from 1977 until his retirement in 1992; his dedication to closely
1111 interpreting the state's laws was widely known, and his integrity
1212 and detail-oriented approach to legal issues inspired numerous
1313 other lawyers and judges through the years; and
1414 WHEREAS, William Sunday Lott was born on April 28, 1918, in
1515 Clarendon and spent his youth in Amarillo; after studying at
1616 Centenary College in Louisiana and earning his law degree from The
1717 University of Texas School of Law in 1940, he served in the Security
1818 Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II; his duties
1919 while in uniform included serving as a special agent to the 1945
2020 peace conference that resulted in the organization of the United
2121 Nations; and
2222 WHEREAS, In 1944, Mr. Lott wed Ellagene Eanes, and they
2323 settled in Georgetown following the war; the couple raised two
2424 children, Cathy and Bill, and their marriage continued for 51
2525 years, until Mrs. Lott's passing in 1995; and
2626 WHEREAS, Judge Lott was a skilled lawyer who served as
2727 assistant attorney general for the State of Texas from 1947 to 1952
2828 and worked as the assistant county attorney for Williamson County;
2929 he also maintained a private law practice in Georgetown prior to his
3030 election to the bench in 1976; and
3131 WHEREAS, This innovative judge played a central role in
3232 efforts to build the Central Texas Treatment Center, which provides
3333 alcohol and drug rehabilitation services, and he also oversaw
3434 important changes to the juvenile probation system and urged the
3535 construction of a juvenile detention center; once completed, that
3636 center was named in Judge Lott's honor, and he also received a
3737 number of other honors and tributes through the years, being named
3838 Man of the Year by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce in 1979, a
3939 fellow of the Texas State Bar Association in 1984, and receiving the
4040 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgetown Area Community
4141 Foundation; and
4242 WHEREAS, Judge Lott's commitment to his community extended
4343 beyond the courtroom; he was an active participant in a long list of
4444 organizations, committees, and charity efforts, which included the
4545 Masonic Lodge, the Georgetown Rotary and Lions Clubs, the United
4646 Way, the Georgetown Citizens' Advisory Committee, and many more;
4747 remembered as a courtly gentleman who proudly upheld dignified
4848 traditions both inside and outside the courtroom, William Lott had
4949 a lasting and profound effect on the citizens of Williamson County,
5050 and his legacy will be respected far into the future; now,
5151 therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5353 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable William
5454 S. Lott and express sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
5555 to his children, Cathy Lott Durr and Bill Hervey Lott and his wife,
5656 Gisela; to his grandchildren, Ryan Travis Lott and Neal Brandon
5757 Lott; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5959 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
6060 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge
6161 William S. Lott.
