44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Katie Stone of Hornedo Middle School in El Paso has
66 won great distinction for herself and her school by taking first
77 place in the 2009 El Paso Times Spelling Bee; and
88 WHEREAS, An eighth-grader at the school, this talented
99 13-year-old has participated twice before in the El Paso spelling
1010 bee, as a fifth- and sixth-grader; and
1111 WHEREAS, This year, Miss Stone competed against 120 students
1212 from area elementary and middle schools; the two-day contest lasted
1313 18 rounds, making it the longest spelling bee in El Paso history;
1414 and
1515 WHEREAS, Miss Stone triumphed in the final round of
1616 competition by correctly spelling "cauterize," and her victory
1717 qualifies her to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee
1818 in Washington, D.C., in May; and
1919 WHEREAS, Miss Stone's ability, determination, and poise
2020 under pressure are impressive, and she may indeed look forward to a
2121 future that is bright with promise; now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2323 Legislature hereby congratulate Katie Stone on winning the 2009 El
2424 Paso Times Spelling Bee and extend to her sincere best wishes for
2525 continued success; and, be it further
2626 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2727 prepared for Miss Stone as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2828 House of Representatives.
