5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, On May 2, 2009, current and former residents of the |

6 | 6 | | Doans community in Wilbarger County are gathering for the 126th |
---|
7 | 7 | | annual Doan's May Day Picnic in Vernon; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Considered the oldest ongoing historical |
---|
9 | 9 | | celebration in Texas, the event traces its history back to a simple |
---|
10 | 10 | | picnic on May 1, 1884, which was enjoyed by a half-dozen people in a |
---|
11 | 11 | | grove of trees near the Red River; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Starting a tradition that continues today, a queen |
---|
13 | 13 | | was crowned at the 1911 festivities, which included carnivals, |
---|
14 | 14 | | rodeos, airplane rides, barbecues, storytelling by early settlers, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and political speeches; stores closed so that employees could |
---|
16 | 16 | | attend, and later it became a two-day affair with Sunday morning |
---|
17 | 17 | | services; more than a century later, the highlight of this event |
---|
18 | 18 | | remains the coronation of a king and queen, and selected for this |
---|
19 | 19 | | honor in 2009 are King Jayton Gray, from the House of Stringer, and |
---|
20 | 20 | | Queen Morgan Ashley, from the House of Garrard; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The first settlers in Wilbarger County were members |
---|
22 | 22 | | of the Doan family who arrived in 1878 and established a trading |
---|
23 | 23 | | post known as Doan's Store at a Red River crossing on the Great |
---|
24 | 24 | | Western Trail; the original adobe building, owned by Corwin Doan, |
---|
25 | 25 | | was renovated by the Wilbarger Historical Commission and is the |
---|
26 | 26 | | oldest structure in the county; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Nicknamed "the jumping off place" by trail drivers, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Doan's Crossing thrived as the last chance to buy supplies before |
---|
29 | 29 | | travelers entered Indian territory; the modest settlement grew to |
---|
30 | 30 | | include supply stores, a post office, a two-story hotel, a saloon, a |
---|
31 | 31 | | drug store, a wagon yard, a blacksmith, a restaurant, a school, a |
---|
32 | 32 | | chapel, and several homes; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Jonathan and Corwin Doan and their families were |
---|
34 | 34 | | Quakers who enhanced community relations by befriending local |
---|
35 | 35 | | Indians, learning their language, and establishing lifelong |
---|
36 | 36 | | friendships; Corwin Doan was appointed Indian agent and hosted |
---|
37 | 37 | | visits by Quanah Parker and other famous chiefs and their tribes; |
---|
38 | 38 | | and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, The Indians would trade only with the Doan family, |
---|
40 | 40 | | who also counted among their regular customers the trail drivers |
---|
41 | 41 | | who herded six million cattle past the trading post during the last |
---|
42 | 42 | | two decades of the century; in 1931, a granite monument was placed |
---|
43 | 43 | | near Doan's Store in honor of those courageous trail drivers; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, The people of Doans take justifiable pride in their |
---|
45 | 45 | | community and the immeasurable contributions its citizens have made |
---|
46 | 46 | | to the rich history and culture of the Lone Star State, and it is |
---|
47 | 47 | | indeed fitting that they be acknowledged at this time; now, |
---|
48 | 48 | | therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 126th Doan's May Day Picnic and |
---|
51 | 51 | | extend to all celebrants best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable |
---|
52 | 52 | | event. |
