44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, On May 2, 2009, current and former residents of the
66 Doans community in Wilbarger County are gathering for the 126th
77 annual Doan's May Day Picnic in Vernon; and
88 WHEREAS, Considered the oldest ongoing historical
99 celebration in Texas, the event traces its history back to a simple
1010 picnic on May 1, 1884, which was enjoyed by a half-dozen people in a
1111 grove of trees near the Red River; and
1212 WHEREAS, Starting a tradition that continues today, a queen
1313 was crowned at the 1911 festivities, which included carnivals,
1414 rodeos, airplane rides, barbecues, storytelling by early settlers,
1515 and political speeches; stores closed so that employees could
1616 attend, and later it became a two-day affair with Sunday morning
1717 services; more than a century later, the highlight of this event
1818 remains the coronation of a king and queen, and selected for this
1919 honor in 2009 are King Jayton Gray, from the House of Stringer, and
2020 Queen Morgan Ashley, from the House of Garrard; and
2121 WHEREAS, The first settlers in Wilbarger County were members
2222 of the Doan family who arrived in 1878 and established a trading
2323 post known as Doan's Store at a Red River crossing on the Great
2424 Western Trail; the original adobe building, owned by Corwin Doan,
2525 was renovated by the Wilbarger Historical Commission and is the
2626 oldest structure in the county; and
2727 WHEREAS, Nicknamed "the jumping off place" by trail drivers,
2828 Doan's Crossing thrived as the last chance to buy supplies before
2929 travelers entered Indian territory; the modest settlement grew to
3030 include supply stores, a post office, a two-story hotel, a saloon, a
3131 drug store, a wagon yard, a blacksmith, a restaurant, a school, a
3232 chapel, and several homes; and
3333 WHEREAS, Jonathan and Corwin Doan and their families were
3434 Quakers who enhanced community relations by befriending local
3535 Indians, learning their language, and establishing lifelong
3636 friendships; Corwin Doan was appointed Indian agent and hosted
3737 visits by Quanah Parker and other famous chiefs and their tribes;
3838 and
3939 WHEREAS, The Indians would trade only with the Doan family,
4040 who also counted among their regular customers the trail drivers
4141 who herded six million cattle past the trading post during the last
4242 two decades of the century; in 1931, a granite monument was placed
4343 near Doan's Store in honor of those courageous trail drivers; and
4444 WHEREAS, The people of Doans take justifiable pride in their
4545 community and the immeasurable contributions its citizens have made
4646 to the rich history and culture of the Lone Star State, and it is
4747 indeed fitting that they be acknowledged at this time; now,
4848 therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5050 Legislature hereby commemorate the 126th Doan's May Day Picnic and
5151 extend to all celebrants best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable
5252 event.
