44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their
66 memories of John Fullerton Sammons of Temple, who passed away on
77 March 3, 2009, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Georgia, Mr. Sammons was born on August
99 12, 1922, to Ulmont Bransford Sammons and Emma Lizzie Fullerton
1010 Sammons; he earned his bachelor's degree with honors from the
1111 University of Georgia, where he was active in numerous campus clubs
1212 and organizations, including ROTC, through which he became
1313 commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Sammons was a procurement officer stationed at
1515 Fort Hood when he made a trip to Temple to buy supplies and found
1616 himself at a hardware store owned by the father of the woman who
1717 would become his wife; his diary recounts that he knew from the
1818 first moment they met that Marilyn Laramey was the girl he would
1919 someday marry; and
2020 WHEREAS, Serving in the European theater during World War II
2121 as a lieutenant in the 3rd Army under the command of General George
2222 S. Patton, Mr. Sammons was part of the second wave of soldiers to
2323 arrive at Omaha Beach; he left a detailed written legacy of the
2424 battles fought, friends lost, and challenges faced, and the shared
2525 experiences of war created a lasting bond between him and his fellow
2626 soldiers; and
2727 WHEREAS, Returning to civilian life, he married Marilyn
2828 Laramey on August 3, 1946, at Grace Presbyterian Church, a
2929 congregation he later served as an elder, Sunday school teacher,
3030 and church treasurer; and
3131 WHEREAS, Mr. Sammons joined the family business and
3232 eventually became the president and co-owner of Temple Supply
3333 Company; active in local affairs, he was a Mason, a member of the
3434 Kiwanis Club, and a Shriner for more than 50 years; he also served
3535 as vice president of the Temple Jaycees and the Temple Chamber of
3636 Commerce; and
3737 WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known John Sammons
3838 will remember his enduring love of his family, his community, and
3939 his country, and although he will be deeply missed, his legacy will
4040 live on in the hearts of those whose lives he so richly blessed;
4141 now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Fullerton
4444 Sammons and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
4545 family: to his wife, Marilyn Sammons; to his son, John F.
4646 Sammons, Jr.; to his daughter, Lynn Sammons Darst; to his five
4747 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and to his other
4848 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5151 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John
5252 Sammons.
