5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their |

6 | 6 | | memories of John Fullerton Sammons of Temple, who passed away on |

7 | 7 | | March 3, 2009, at the age of 86; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Georgia, Mr. Sammons was born on August |
---|
9 | 9 | | 12, 1922, to Ulmont Bransford Sammons and Emma Lizzie Fullerton |
---|
10 | 10 | | Sammons; he earned his bachelor's degree with honors from the |
---|
11 | 11 | | University of Georgia, where he was active in numerous campus clubs |
---|
12 | 12 | | and organizations, including ROTC, through which he became |
---|
13 | 13 | | commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sammons was a procurement officer stationed at |
---|
15 | 15 | | Fort Hood when he made a trip to Temple to buy supplies and found |
---|
16 | 16 | | himself at a hardware store owned by the father of the woman who |
---|
17 | 17 | | would become his wife; his diary recounts that he knew from the |
---|
18 | 18 | | first moment they met that Marilyn Laramey was the girl he would |
---|
19 | 19 | | someday marry; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Serving in the European theater during World War II |
---|
21 | 21 | | as a lieutenant in the 3rd Army under the command of General George |
---|
22 | 22 | | S. Patton, Mr. Sammons was part of the second wave of soldiers to |
---|
23 | 23 | | arrive at Omaha Beach; he left a detailed written legacy of the |
---|
24 | 24 | | battles fought, friends lost, and challenges faced, and the shared |
---|
25 | 25 | | experiences of war created a lasting bond between him and his fellow |
---|
26 | 26 | | soldiers; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Returning to civilian life, he married Marilyn |
---|
28 | 28 | | Laramey on August 3, 1946, at Grace Presbyterian Church, a |
---|
29 | 29 | | congregation he later served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, |
---|
30 | 30 | | and church treasurer; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sammons joined the family business and |
---|
32 | 32 | | eventually became the president and co-owner of Temple Supply |
---|
33 | 33 | | Company; active in local affairs, he was a Mason, a member of the |
---|
34 | 34 | | Kiwanis Club, and a Shriner for more than 50 years; he also served |
---|
35 | 35 | | as vice president of the Temple Jaycees and the Temple Chamber of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Commerce; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known John Sammons |
---|
38 | 38 | | will remember his enduring love of his family, his community, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | his country, and although he will be deeply missed, his legacy will |
---|
40 | 40 | | live on in the hearts of those whose lives he so richly blessed; |
---|
41 | 41 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Fullerton |
---|
44 | 44 | | Sammons and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his |
---|
45 | 45 | | family: to his wife, Marilyn Sammons; to his son, John F. |
---|
46 | 46 | | Sammons, Jr.; to his daughter, Lynn Sammons Darst; to his five |

47 | 47 | | grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and to his other |
---|
48 | 48 | | relatives and friends; and, be it further |

49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
