| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter H, Chapter 201, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | is amended by adding Sections 201.6012 and 201.6013 to read as |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 201.6012. COORDINATION OF STATEWIDE PASSENGER RAIL |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | SYSTEM. To facilitate the development and interconnectivity of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | rail systems in this state, the department shall coordinate |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | activities regarding the planning, construction, operation, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | maintenance of a statewide passenger rail system. The department |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | shall coordinate with other entities involved with passenger rail |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | systems, including governmental entities, private entities, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | nonprofit corporations. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Sec. 201.6013. LONG-TERM PLAN FOR STATEWIDE PASSENGER RAIL |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SYSTEM. The department shall prepare and update annually a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | long-term plan for a statewide passenger rail system. Information |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | contained in the plan must include: |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (1) a description of existing and proposed passenger |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | rail systems; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (2) information regarding the status of passenger rail |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | systems under construction; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | (3) an analysis of potential interconnectivity |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | difficulties; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (4) ridership projections for proposed passenger rail |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | projects; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (5) ridership statistics for existing passenger rail |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | systems. |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
