8 | 8 | therapeutic optometrists. | |
9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Subchapter H, Chapter 351, Occupations Code, is | |
11 | 11 | amended by adding Section 351.3582 to read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | Sec. 351.3582. ADMINISTRATION OF IMMUNIZATIONS AND | |
13 | 13 | VACCINATIONS. (a) A therapeutic optometrist that satisfies the | |
14 | 14 | education requirements established by the board under this section | |
15 | 15 | may administer an immunization or vaccination to a person over the | |
16 | 16 | age of 14. | |
17 | 17 | (b) A therapeutic optometrist may not delegate the | |
18 | 18 | authority to administer an immunization or vaccination. | |
19 | 19 | (c) The board shall establish: | |
20 | 20 | (1) minimum education and continuing education | |
21 | 21 | standards for a therapeutic optometrist who administers an | |
22 | 22 | immunization or vaccination. The standards must include Centers | |
23 | 23 | for Disease Control and Prevention training, basic life support | |
24 | 24 | training, and hands-on training in techniques for administering | |
25 | 25 | immunizations and vaccinations; and | |
26 | 26 | (2) reporting requirements designed to notify a | |
27 | 27 | patient's primary care physician of any immunization or vaccination | |
28 | 28 | administered by a therapeutic optometrist. | |
29 | 29 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
