66 relating to the designation of May 9 as Willie Velasquez Day.
77 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
88 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 662, Government Code, is
99 amended by adding Section 662.054 to read as follows:
1010 Sec. 662.054. WILLIE VELASQUEZ DAY. (a) The 9th day of May
1111 is Willie Velasquez Day in observance of the birthday of William
1212 "Willie" Cardenas Velasquez, and in honor of his timeless and
1313 invaluable contribution to the civil rights, suffrage, and
1414 effective political participation of Mexican Americans in this
1515 country, and to the promotion of the principles of representative
1616 democracy for all people.
1717 (b) Willie Velasquez Day shall be regularly observed by
1818 appropriate ceremonies in the public schools and other places to
1919 commemorate the birthday of William "Willie" Cardenas Velasquez.
2020 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
