| 8 | 8 | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 662, Government Code, is | |
| 9 | 9 | amended by adding Section 662.054 to read as follows: | |
| 10 | 10 | Sec. 662.054. WILLIE VELASQUEZ DAY. (a) The 9th day of May | |
| 11 | 11 | is Willie Velasquez Day in observance of the birthday of William | |
| 12 | 12 | "Willie" Cardenas Velasquez, and in honor of his timeless and | |
| 13 | 13 | invaluable contribution to the civil rights, suffrage, and | |
| 14 | 14 | effective political participation of Mexican Americans in this | |
| 15 | 15 | country, and to the promotion of the principles of representative | |
| 16 | 16 | democracy for all people. | |
| 17 | 17 | (b) Willie Velasquez Day shall be regularly observed by | |
| 18 | 18 | appropriate ceremonies in the public schools and other places to | |
| 19 | 19 | commemorate the birthday of William "Willie" Cardenas Velasquez. | |
| 20 | 20 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
