| 7 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 8 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 662, Government Code, is |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | amended by adding Section 662.055 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Sec. 662.055. DR. HECTOR P. GARCIA DAY. (a) The third |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Wednesday of September is Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day in memory of the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | significant contributions to the Mexican American civil rights |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | movement of Dr. Hector P. Garcia, a distinguished physician and a |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the founder of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the American GI Forum, which promotes civil rights protection of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Hispanic veterans and all Americans. Dr. Garcia, a World War II |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | hero, was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with six battle stars in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | recognition of his meritorious service to the United States. |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (b) Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day may be regularly observed by |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | appropriate ceremonies and activities in the public schools and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | other places to properly commemorate the importance of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | contributions made by Dr. Garcia. |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
