44 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to
66 recognize Tommy Nobis for his remarkable football career with The
77 University of Texas Longhorns and the Atlanta Falcons of the
88 National Football League; and
99 WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Mr. Nobis compiled one of
1010 the most celebrated careers in the history of the football program
1111 at The University of Texas; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mr. Nobis earned all-state honors as a tight end and
1313 middle linebacker at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio
1414 before enrolling at The University of Texas; and
1515 WHEREAS, Starting on both offense and defense for the
1616 Longhorns his entire college career, Mr. Nobis was a two-time
1717 All-American and a three-time All-Southwest Conference player; as a
1818 sophomore, he was a vital part of the Longhorns' 1963 national
1919 championship team, and as a senior, he won the 1965 Outland Trophy
2020 as the nation's best interior lineman and the 1965 Maxwell Award as
2121 college football's best player; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Nobis became the first player ever drafted by
2323 the expansion Atlanta Falcons and the number one overall draft pick
2424 in the 1966 National Football League draft; in his first year as a
2525 professional, he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and voted to
2626 the Pro Bowl; and
2727 WHEREAS, Known for his aggressive, competitive style of play
2828 and the ferocity of his tackling, Mr. Nobis went on to participate
2929 in five Pro Bowls, and he was twice named an All-Pro; and
3030 WHEREAS, Tommy Nobis has been accorded numerous honors,
3131 including being named to the College Football Hall of Fame, the
3232 Sports Illustrated 1869-1969 All-Century Team, the State of Texas
3333 Hall of Fame, and the Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor; his number 60
3434 jersey has been retired by both The University of Texas and the
3535 Atlanta Falcons in tribute to his storied career; and
3636 WHEREAS, Mr. Nobis played 11 seasons for the Falcons and
3737 currently serves as a consultant to the team; long known as "Mr.
3838 Falcon" because he was the first member of the team, he has now been
3939 with the organization for more than 40 years; he is justly deserving
4040 of recognition for his stellar football career and his many
4141 accomplishments off the field; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
4343 hereby commend Tommy Nobis on his many notable achievements and
4444 extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his future
4545 endeavors; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for him
4747 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
