5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to |

6 | 6 | | recognize Tommy Nobis for his remarkable football career with The |

7 | 7 | | University of Texas Longhorns and the Atlanta Falcons of the |
---|
8 | 8 | | National Football League; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Mr. Nobis compiled one of |
---|
10 | 10 | | the most celebrated careers in the history of the football program |
---|
11 | 11 | | at The University of Texas; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Nobis earned all-state honors as a tight end and |
---|
13 | 13 | | middle linebacker at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio |
---|
14 | 14 | | before enrolling at The University of Texas; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Starting on both offense and defense for the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Longhorns his entire college career, Mr. Nobis was a two-time |
---|
17 | 17 | | All-American and a three-time All-Southwest Conference player; as a |
---|
18 | 18 | | sophomore, he was a vital part of the Longhorns' 1963 national |
---|
19 | 19 | | championship team, and as a senior, he won the 1965 Outland Trophy |
---|
20 | 20 | | as the nation's best interior lineman and the 1965 Maxwell Award as |
---|
21 | 21 | | college football's best player; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Nobis became the first player ever drafted by |
---|
23 | 23 | | the expansion Atlanta Falcons and the number one overall draft pick |
---|
24 | 24 | | in the 1966 National Football League draft; in his first year as a |
---|
25 | 25 | | professional, he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and voted to |
---|
26 | 26 | | the Pro Bowl; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Known for his aggressive, competitive style of play |
---|
28 | 28 | | and the ferocity of his tackling, Mr. Nobis went on to participate |
---|
29 | 29 | | in five Pro Bowls, and he was twice named an All-Pro; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Tommy Nobis has been accorded numerous honors, |
---|
31 | 31 | | including being named to the College Football Hall of Fame, the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Sports Illustrated 1869-1969 All-Century Team, the State of Texas |
---|
33 | 33 | | Hall of Fame, and the Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor; his number 60 |

34 | 34 | | jersey has been retired by both The University of Texas and the |
---|
35 | 35 | | Atlanta Falcons in tribute to his storied career; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Nobis played 11 seasons for the Falcons and |
---|
37 | 37 | | currently serves as a consultant to the team; long known as "Mr. |
---|
38 | 38 | | Falcon" because he was the first member of the team, he has now been |
---|
39 | 39 | | with the organization for more than 40 years; he is justly deserving |
---|
40 | 40 | | of recognition for his stellar football career and his many |
---|
41 | 41 | | accomplishments off the field; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

43 | 43 | | hereby commend Tommy Nobis on his many notable achievements and |
---|
44 | 44 | | extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his future |
---|
45 | 45 | | endeavors; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for him |

47 | 47 | | as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature. |
