SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 10 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the City of Dallas on the occasion of its 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Celebration, which is culminating with an awards banquet on January 17, 2009; and WHEREAS, A beloved pastor, a powerful orator, and one of the seminal figures of America's civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to nonviolence and his tireless efforts on behalf of civil rights, equal educational opportunity, and improved economic well-being for all Americans, regardless of race or creed; and WHEREAS, The City of Dallas has declared the theme for its 27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Celebration to be "Remember! Celebrate! Act! The Dream Continues. . ."; activities will include a candle-lighting ceremony and a march and parade to include bands, floats, and a live radio broadcast; and WHEREAS, The Martin Luther King, Jr., Awards Banquet is being held at the Sheraton Hotel Dallas and features noted author, psychiatrist, educator, and social critic Dr. Alvin Poussaint as the keynote speaker; this celebration serves as a reminder to all Texans of our country's ideals of equal justice before the law and tolerance of others' beliefs; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend the City of Dallas on its history of outstanding celebrations on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day and extend best wishes for a memorable celebration in 2009; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a memento of this special occasion.
