| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the City of Dallas on the occasion of its 27th annual |

| 4 | 4 | | Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Celebration, which is |

| 5 | 5 | | culminating with an awards banquet on January 17, 2009; and |

| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A beloved pastor, a powerful orator, and one of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the seminal figures of America's civil rights movement, Dr. |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Martin Luther King, Jr., was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | for his commitment to nonviolence and his tireless efforts on |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | behalf of civil rights, equal educational opportunity, and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | improved economic well-being for all Americans, regardless of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | race or creed; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The City of Dallas has declared the theme for its |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Celebration to be |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | "Remember! Celebrate! Act! The Dream Continues. . ."; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | activities will include a candle-lighting ceremony and a march |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and parade to include bands, floats, and a live radio broadcast; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Martin Luther King, Jr., Awards Banquet is |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | being held at the Sheraton Hotel Dallas and features noted |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | author, psychiatrist, educator, and social critic Dr. Alvin |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Poussaint as the keynote speaker; this celebration serves as a |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | reminder to all Texans of our country's ideals of equal justice |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | before the law and tolerance of others' beliefs; now, therefore, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby commend the City of Dallas on its history of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | outstanding celebrations on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day and |

| 29 | 29 | | extend best wishes for a memorable celebration in 2009; and, be |
