                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 100
 In Memory
 of
 Irwin Sexton
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Irwin "Mike"
 Sexton, who died November 18, 2008, at the age of 87; and
 WHEREAS, Born November 7, 1921, Mr. Sexton served the
 country during World War II as a member of the United States Army
 Air Forces; following the war, he earned a bachelor's degree at
 Purdue University and a master's degree in library science from
 Western Reserve University; and
 WHEREAS, Following stints with libraries in Indiana,
 Missouri, and Oklahoma, Mr. Sexton moved to San Antonio, where he
 served as director of the San Antonio Public Library system from
 1961 to 1989; and
 WHEREAS, Under his direction, the library's circulation
 more than doubled, and the system opened 13 branch locations; he
 instituted one of the first books-by-mail programs in the country
 and greatly expanded bookmobile service; and
 WHEREAS, Along with his wife, the late Kathryn Sexton, he
 wrote a book on the life of Samuel A. Maverick; he was an avid
 card player and handyman, whose many talents and projects
 included automobile repair and tree trimming; and
 WHEREAS, A man of strength, compassion, and unwavering
 faith, Mr. Sexton gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom,
 warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
 knew him; and
 WHEREAS, He was a committed husband and father, and his
 family and friends will continue to live with the cherished
 memories of his life and his many accomplishments; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Irwin "Mike" Sexton: his son and daughter-in-law,
 David and Debbie Sexton; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles
 and Joyce Sexton; and his granddaughter, Erin; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Irwin "Mike" Sexton.
