55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Irwin "Mike"
77 Sexton, who died November 18, 2008, at the age of 87; and
88 WHEREAS, Born November 7, 1921, Mr. Sexton served the
99 country during World War II as a member of the United States Army
1010 Air Forces; following the war, he earned a bachelor's degree at
1111 Purdue University and a master's degree in library science from
1212 Western Reserve University; and
1313 WHEREAS, Following stints with libraries in Indiana,
1414 Missouri, and Oklahoma, Mr. Sexton moved to San Antonio, where he
1515 served as director of the San Antonio Public Library system from
1616 1961 to 1989; and
1717 WHEREAS, Under his direction, the library's circulation
1818 more than doubled, and the system opened 13 branch locations; he
1919 instituted one of the first books-by-mail programs in the country
2020 and greatly expanded bookmobile service; and
2121 WHEREAS, Along with his wife, the late Kathryn Sexton, he
2222 wrote a book on the life of Samuel A. Maverick; he was an avid
2323 card player and handyman, whose many talents and projects
2424 included automobile repair and tree trimming; and
2525 WHEREAS, A man of strength, compassion, and unwavering
2626 faith, Mr. Sexton gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom,
2727 warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
2828 knew him; and
2929 WHEREAS, He was a committed husband and father, and his
3030 family and friends will continue to live with the cherished
3131 memories of his life and his many accomplishments; now,
3232 therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3434 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3535 family of Irwin "Mike" Sexton: his son and daughter-in-law,
3636 David and Debbie Sexton; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles
3737 and Joyce Sexton; and his granddaughter, Erin; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3939 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4040 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4141 memory of Irwin "Mike" Sexton.
