5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |

6 | 6 | | citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Irwin "Mike" |
---|
7 | 7 | | Sexton, who died November 18, 2008, at the age of 87; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born November 7, 1921, Mr. Sexton served the |
---|
9 | 9 | | country during World War II as a member of the United States Army |
---|
10 | 10 | | Air Forces; following the war, he earned a bachelor's degree at |
---|
11 | 11 | | Purdue University and a master's degree in library science from |
---|
12 | 12 | | Western Reserve University; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Following stints with libraries in Indiana, |
---|
14 | 14 | | Missouri, and Oklahoma, Mr. Sexton moved to San Antonio, where he |
---|
15 | 15 | | served as director of the San Antonio Public Library system from |
---|
16 | 16 | | 1961 to 1989; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Under his direction, the library's circulation |
---|
18 | 18 | | more than doubled, and the system opened 13 branch locations; he |
---|
19 | 19 | | instituted one of the first books-by-mail programs in the country |
---|
20 | 20 | | and greatly expanded bookmobile service; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Along with his wife, the late Kathryn Sexton, he |
---|
22 | 22 | | wrote a book on the life of Samuel A. Maverick; he was an avid |
---|
23 | 23 | | card player and handyman, whose many talents and projects |
---|
24 | 24 | | included automobile repair and tree trimming; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A man of strength, compassion, and unwavering |
---|
26 | 26 | | faith, Mr. Sexton gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, |
---|
27 | 27 | | warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who |
---|
28 | 28 | | knew him; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, He was a committed husband and father, and his |
---|
30 | 30 | | family and friends will continue to live with the cherished |
---|
31 | 31 | | memories of his life and his many accomplishments; now, |
---|
32 | 32 | | therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
35 | 35 | | family of Irwin "Mike" Sexton: his son and daughter-in-law, |
---|
36 | 36 | | David and Debbie Sexton; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles |
---|
37 | 37 | | and Joyce Sexton; and his granddaughter, Erin; and, be it further |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

39 | 39 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |

40 | 40 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
