1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1003
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
3	3	joining citizens across America in observing our national
4	4	holiday, Memorial Day, on Monday, May 25, 2009; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day
6	6	and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed
7	7	on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers; in 1968,
8	8	Congress designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day; and
9	9	WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, we pay homage to those who lost
10	10	their lives fighting for our nation, for it is due to their
11	11	courage and sacrifice that today our nation is free and
12	12	prosperous; and
13	13	WHEREAS, This special day is an opportunity for Americans
14	14	everywhere to express their heartfelt gratitude to the United
15	15	States veterans, both living and dead, for the valor and
16	16	dedication they have shown on behalf of our beloved country;
17	17	today, there are over 1.5 million veterans living in Texas and
18	18	deserving of our praise; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Those who died for their country in World War I,
20	20	World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War,
21	21	Operation Iraqi Freedom, and other conflicts have left behind
22	22	legacies of courage and devotion for generations of American
23	23	citizens, as well as memories that will be treasured forever in
24	24	the hearts and minds of all who knew them; and
25	25	WHEREAS, It is a grateful nation today that reflects upon
26	26	our American heritage and recognizes the extreme sacrifices made
27	27	by all who serve in the armed forces; now, therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
29	29	Legislature, hereby express appreciation to all the brave men and
30	30	women who have served our great country and honor the memory of
31	31	those who died on its behalf; and, be it further
32	32	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
33	33	honor of all who sacrificed their lives to protect our nation.
