11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1003
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
33 joining citizens across America in observing our national
44 holiday, Memorial Day, on Monday, May 25, 2009; and
55 WHEREAS, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day
66 and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed
77 on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers; in 1968,
88 Congress designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day; and
99 WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, we pay homage to those who lost
1010 their lives fighting for our nation, for it is due to their
1111 courage and sacrifice that today our nation is free and
1212 prosperous; and
1313 WHEREAS, This special day is an opportunity for Americans
1414 everywhere to express their heartfelt gratitude to the United
1515 States veterans, both living and dead, for the valor and
1616 dedication they have shown on behalf of our beloved country;
1717 today, there are over 1.5 million veterans living in Texas and
1818 deserving of our praise; and
1919 WHEREAS, Those who died for their country in World War I,
2020 World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War,
2121 Operation Iraqi Freedom, and other conflicts have left behind
2222 legacies of courage and devotion for generations of American
2323 citizens, as well as memories that will be treasured forever in
2424 the hearts and minds of all who knew them; and
2525 WHEREAS, It is a grateful nation today that reflects upon
2626 our American heritage and recognizes the extreme sacrifices made
2727 by all who serve in the armed forces; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2929 Legislature, hereby express appreciation to all the brave men and
3030 women who have served our great country and honor the memory of
3131 those who died on its behalf; and, be it further
3232 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3333 honor of all who sacrificed their lives to protect our nation.
