| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Olive Stephens for more than a half century of |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | outstanding service to the citizens of Shady Shores; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Recently elected to her 20th term as mayor of |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Shady Shores at the age of 92, Olive Stephens has played an |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | important role in the town's history since before its |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | incorporation in 1960; Mrs. Stephens and her family bought land |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | in the area in 1957, and she served as a member of the city's |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | first town council in 1963; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was first elected mayor in 1973, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | she was able to forestall increases in city taxes until 2002 by |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | conducting fund-raising events, including garage sales, pancake |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | dinners, Friday night dominoes, and ceramic classes where |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | residents sold their wares to fund the fire department; the town |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | was able to pay for a new community center in cash because of her |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | efforts; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens has received numerous honors for |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | her legacy of service, including the Mildred and Taylor Hawk |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Award from the Denton County Historical Foundation and the United |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Way Life Membership Certificate; the Denton Independent School |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | District has named an elementary school in her honor; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, An exceptional public servant, Mrs. Stephens is |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | truly deserving of recognition for her dedication and her many |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby commend Olive Stephens on her many years of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | exemplary service to the citizens of Shady Shores and extend to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | her best wishes for continued success in all her future |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | endeavors; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
