55 WHEREAS, The citizens of Texas lost a passionate leader and
66 dynamic trailblazer with the death of Richard F. "Ric" Williamson
77 on December 30, 2007, at the age of 55; and
88 WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson was a brilliant and visionary
99 leader whose extraordinary efforts on behalf of this state were
1010 as grand as Texas itself; a man who cared deeply about the
1111 well-being of his community and his state, he epitomized the
1212 "Spirit of Texas" with his bold ideas for the betterment of this
1313 state and his wholehearted efforts to put them into practice; and
1414 WHEREAS, Born on January 25, 1952, in Abilene, Mr.
1515 Williamson attended The University of Texas in Austin, where he
1616 married a fellow Longhorn, Mary Ann Welsch, in 1973 and earned
1717 his bachelor's degree in 1974; the couple settled in Weatherford
1818 and raised three beautiful daughters, Melissa, Katherine, and
1919 Sara, and they had two grandchildren; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson was an avid hunter and a devoted
2121 fan of women's fast-pitch softball; he was a cofounder of RAW
2222 Energy, and he and his wife established MKS Consulting
2323 Corporation; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson began his service to the State of
2525 Texas in 1985 when he was elected to the Texas House of
2626 Representatives, where he served for 14 years; and
2727 WHEREAS, While serving as Vice Chairman of the
2828 Appropriations Committee, Mr. Williamson, a proponent of
2929 performance budgeting, became fondly known as one of the "Pit
3030 Bulls," conservative lawmakers who seriously questioned state
3131 spending practices; and
3232 WHEREAS, Professional and legislative accomplishments
3333 earned Mr. Williamson many awards through the years; he was
3434 particularly proud of his recognition by Texas Monthly magazine
3535 in both 1989 and 1991 as one of Texas' "Ten Best Legislators"; and
3636 WHEREAS, In 2001, Mr. Williamson was appointed to serve on
3737 the Texas Transportation Commission, and in January of 2004, he
3838 became chairman of the commission, a position he held until his
3939 death; and
4040 WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson was a longtime close friend and
4141 trusted advisor to Governor Rick Perry, and he contributed
4242 immeasurably to the growth and progress of the state through his
4343 dedication to public service, his ambitious and farsighted
4444 planning, and his steadfast leadership; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4646 Legislature, hereby honor the memory of Ric Williamson, a great
4747 Texan and a cherished friend to many, whose legacy will continue
4848 to shape the state's infrastructure and inspire the lives of
4949 others for years to come; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5151 his family, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
5252 in memory of Richard F. "Ric" Williamson.
