SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1020 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Mary Speer Garza and David Garza on the occasion of their retirement as educators; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Garza are retiring with a combined total of close to 60 years in education; both Mary Garza and David Garza are highly regarded educators renowned for their resourcefulness and their commitment to providing students with the foundation they need to further their education and go on to become productive citizens in their communities; and WHEREAS, Mary Garza is retiring from Alma Pierce Elementary School in Laredo after 30 years in education; she also taught for the Job Corps, Ochoa Elementary School, Ligarde Elementary School, and Nixon High School; an exemplary role model for other teachers, she was selected this year by her peers at Alma Pierce Elementary School as the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year; and WHEREAS, David Garza is retiring as principal of Alicia Ruiz Elementary School in Laredo; he taught at Nye Elementary School for 12 years before moving into educational administration in 1992; he was an assistant principal for the Alicia Ruiz Elementary School for six years before becoming principal in 1998; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Garza have had a positive impact on the lives of many children and faculty members in the schools of Laredo, and they will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend Mary Speer Garza and David Garza for their many contributions to the education system of this state and extend to them best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them as an expression of appreciation from the Texas Senate.
