SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1022 In Memory of Elizabeth Perkins Prothro WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Wichita Falls in mourning the loss of Elizabeth Perkins Prothro, who died May 23, 2009, at the age of 89; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth Perkins was born in 1919 in Dallas; she grew up in Wichita Falls, graduated from Wichita Falls High School, attended Sweet Briar College, and graduated from Southern Methodist University; she married Charles Prothro, a Wichita Falls oilman, who died in 2001; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth and her family are noted for their altruism and for contributing millions of dollars to Southern Methodist University and other institutions over a period that spans nearly a century; Elizabeth's parents endowed the university's theology school in the early 1940s, and she and her husband continued their philanthropic tradition; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth's contributions to academic institutions were numerous; she served on the board of trustees of Southern Methodist University for more than a decade and on the executive board of its Perkins School of Theology; she also served on the board of regents of Midwestern State University; in 2007, she and her family foundation contributed $6 million to fund a major renovation of the Perkins School of Theology; she received a number of honors from Southern Methodist University for her longtime service; and WHEREAS, An exemplary lady of many interests and talents, Mrs. Prothro was also a published photographer and a collector of Bibles; she was committed to promoting the importance of education and culture, and she has left behind a legacy of philanthropy to her children and grandchildren; and WHEREAS, She was a devout Christian and a community leader who was respected throughout the state for her many gifts and accomplishments; she was a woman of integrity, strength, and generosity who gave unselfishly to others; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth Prothro was beloved by her family and friends, and she leaves behind memories that will be held precious by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Elizabeth Perkins Prothro; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elizabeth Prothro.
