5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Wichita Falls in mourning the loss of Elizabeth |
---|
7 | 7 | | Perkins Prothro, who died May 23, 2009, at the age of 89; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Perkins was born in 1919 in Dallas; she |
---|
9 | 9 | | grew up in Wichita Falls, graduated from Wichita Falls High |
---|
10 | 10 | | School, attended Sweet Briar College, and graduated from |
---|
11 | 11 | | Southern Methodist University; she married Charles Prothro, a |
---|
12 | 12 | | Wichita Falls oilman, who died in 2001; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth and her family are noted for their |
---|
14 | 14 | | altruism and for contributing millions of dollars to Southern |
---|
15 | 15 | | Methodist University and other institutions over a period that |
---|
16 | 16 | | spans nearly a century; Elizabeth's parents endowed the |
---|
17 | 17 | | university's theology school in the early 1940s, and she and her |
---|
18 | 18 | | husband continued their philanthropic tradition; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth's contributions to academic |
---|
20 | 20 | | institutions were numerous; she served on the board of trustees |
---|
21 | 21 | | of Southern Methodist University for more than a decade and on |
---|
22 | 22 | | the executive board of its Perkins School of Theology; she also |
---|
23 | 23 | | served on the board of regents of Midwestern State University; in |
---|
24 | 24 | | 2007, she and her family foundation contributed $6 million to |
---|
25 | 25 | | fund a major renovation of the Perkins School of Theology; she |
---|
26 | 26 | | received a number of honors from Southern Methodist University |
---|
27 | 27 | | for her longtime service; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, An exemplary lady of many interests and talents, |
---|
29 | 29 | | Mrs. Prothro was also a published photographer and a collector of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Bibles; she was committed to promoting the importance of |
---|
31 | 31 | | education and culture, and she has left behind a legacy of |
---|
32 | 32 | | philanthropy to her children and grandchildren; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, She was a devout Christian and a community leader |
---|
34 | 34 | | who was respected throughout the state for her many gifts and |
---|
35 | 35 | | accomplishments; she was a woman of integrity, strength, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | generosity who gave unselfishly to others; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Prothro was beloved by her family and |
---|
38 | 38 | | friends, and she leaves behind memories that will be held |
---|
39 | 39 | | precious by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, |
---|
40 | 40 | | therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
43 | 43 | | family of Elizabeth Perkins Prothro; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
45 | 45 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
47 | 47 | | memory of Elizabeth Prothro. |
