55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Wichita Falls in mourning the loss of Elizabeth
77 Perkins Prothro, who died May 23, 2009, at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Perkins was born in 1919 in Dallas; she
99 grew up in Wichita Falls, graduated from Wichita Falls High
1010 School, attended Sweet Briar College, and graduated from
1111 Southern Methodist University; she married Charles Prothro, a
1212 Wichita Falls oilman, who died in 2001; and
1313 WHEREAS, Elizabeth and her family are noted for their
1414 altruism and for contributing millions of dollars to Southern
1515 Methodist University and other institutions over a period that
1616 spans nearly a century; Elizabeth's parents endowed the
1717 university's theology school in the early 1940s, and she and her
1818 husband continued their philanthropic tradition; and
1919 WHEREAS, Elizabeth's contributions to academic
2020 institutions were numerous; she served on the board of trustees
2121 of Southern Methodist University for more than a decade and on
2222 the executive board of its Perkins School of Theology; she also
2323 served on the board of regents of Midwestern State University; in
2424 2007, she and her family foundation contributed $6 million to
2525 fund a major renovation of the Perkins School of Theology; she
2626 received a number of honors from Southern Methodist University
2727 for her longtime service; and
2828 WHEREAS, An exemplary lady of many interests and talents,
2929 Mrs. Prothro was also a published photographer and a collector of
3030 Bibles; she was committed to promoting the importance of
3131 education and culture, and she has left behind a legacy of
3232 philanthropy to her children and grandchildren; and
3333 WHEREAS, She was a devout Christian and a community leader
3434 who was respected throughout the state for her many gifts and
3535 accomplishments; she was a woman of integrity, strength, and
3636 generosity who gave unselfishly to others; and
3737 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Prothro was beloved by her family and
3838 friends, and she leaves behind memories that will be held
3939 precious by all who were privileged to share in her life; now,
4040 therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Elizabeth Perkins Prothro; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4646 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4747 memory of Elizabeth Prothro.
