SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1026 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Antonio Orendain for his many contributions to the struggle for civil rights and farm workers' rights in our state; and WHEREAS, Dedicated to obtaining basic rights for farm workers, Mr. Orendain played an important role in the founding of the United Farm Workers of America; he arrived in the Rio Grande Valley in 1966, where he worked tirelessly to improve the lot of farm workers in the state; he went on to found the Texas Farm Workers Union in 1975; and WHEREAS, In 1977, Mr. Orendain organized and led a march from San Juan to the State Capitol in Austin to protest working conditions and wages for farm workers in the Rio Grande Valley; from there, he led his marchers to Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, resolve, and determination, Mr. Orendain is truly deserving of recognition for his many contributions to the working men and women of Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend Antonio Orendain on his commitment to improving the lives of farm workers; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
