11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1026
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Antonio Orendain for his many contributions to the
44 struggle for civil rights and farm workers' rights in our state;
55 and
66 WHEREAS, Dedicated to obtaining basic rights for farm
77 workers, Mr. Orendain played an important role in the founding of
88 the United Farm Workers of America; he arrived in the Rio Grande
99 Valley in 1966, where he worked tirelessly to improve the lot of
1010 farm workers in the state; he went on to found the Texas Farm
1111 Workers Union in 1975; and
1212 WHEREAS, In 1977, Mr. Orendain organized and led a march
1313 from San Juan to the State Capitol in Austin to protest working
1414 conditions and wages for farm workers in the Rio Grande Valley;
1515 from there, he led his marchers to Washington, D.C.; and
1616 WHEREAS, A man of courage, resolve, and determination, Mr.
1717 Orendain is truly deserving of recognition for his many
1818 contributions to the working men and women of Texas; now,
1919 therefore, be it
2020 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2121 Legislature, hereby commend Antonio Orendain on his commitment
2222 to improving the lives of farm workers; and, be it further
2323 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2424 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
