SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1032 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Lorena Ochoa, who is renowned as one of the most successful golfers in the world, and one of the nicest; and WHEREAS, Lorena Ochoa was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and grew up next to the Guadalajara Country Club; as a young child, she became fascinated with the game of golf while accompanying her father as he played on his days off; she soon began taking lessons and was successfully competing in national junior tournaments at the age of seven; and WHEREAS, An extraordinary young athlete, she played competitive tennis and participated in numerous sports activities; golf, however, was her favorite sport, and as an adolescent, she won 22 state events in Guadalajara and 44 national events in Mexico; and WHEREAS, She won five consecutive titles at the Junior World Golf Championships and played two years with the University of Arizona, where she won 12 out of 20 tournaments, including the first seven consecutively, and garnered numerous accolades for her record-breaking performance, including being named the National Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002; she was the youngest person and first golfer to receive Mexico's National Sports Award; and WHEREAS, She turned professional in 2002 and won three of the 10 events she played on the 2002 Futures Tour; she joined the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour in 2003 and continued racking up championships and awards; in 2004, she became the first Mexican-born player to win on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, winning two Tour titles and placing in the top 10 in three of the four major championships; and WHEREAS, Since the start of the 2006 season, playing in 72 events, she has won 21 tournaments, including two major championships, has placed 58 times in the top 10, has won three Player of the Year awards, and has been named the Associated Press top female athlete two years in a row; in 2007, she became the world's number one ranked golfer and the first woman to make more than $4 million in a single season; she won the Vare Trophy for the years 2006 through 2008 for having the Ladies Professional Golf Association's lowest scoring average; and WHEREAS, In November of 2008, she hosted the new Lorena Ochoa Invitational, an annual Tour event held on her original home course, the Guadalajara Country Club; proceeds from the tournament help support the Lorena Ochoa Foundation, one of the many ways Lorena gives back to her community; the foundation operates a primary school in Guadalajara for underprivileged students and a high school that opened in 2008 with 21 freshman students; and WHEREAS, While the game of golf has earned Lorena fame, it is her muy simptico personality that has earned her the admiration and respect of the public, her legions of fans, and her colleagues on the golf course; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend Lorena Ochoa for her many accomplishments as a golfer and for her altruistic endeavors and extend to her best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Lorena Ochoa as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
