11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1032
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Lorena Ochoa, who is renowned as one of the most
44 successful golfers in the world, and one of the nicest; and
55 WHEREAS, Lorena Ochoa was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and
66 grew up next to the Guadalajara Country Club; as a young child,
77 she became fascinated with the game of golf while accompanying
88 her father as he played on his days off; she soon began taking
99 lessons and was successfully competing in national junior
1010 tournaments at the age of seven; and
1111 WHEREAS, An extraordinary young athlete, she played
1212 competitive tennis and participated in numerous sports
1313 activities; golf, however, was her favorite sport, and as an
1414 adolescent, she won 22 state events in Guadalajara and 44
1515 national events in Mexico; and
1616 WHEREAS, She won five consecutive titles at the Junior
1717 World Golf Championships and played two years with the University
1818 of Arizona, where she won 12 out of 20 tournaments, including the
1919 first seven consecutively, and garnered numerous accolades for
2020 her record-breaking performance, including being named the
2121 National Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year in
2222 2001 and 2002; she was the youngest person and first golfer to
2323 receive Mexico's National Sports Award; and
2424 WHEREAS, She turned professional in 2002 and won three of
2525 the 10 events she played on the 2002 Futures Tour; she joined the
2626 Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour in 2003 and continued
2727 racking up championships and awards; in 2004, she became the
2828 first Mexican-born player to win on the Ladies Professional Golf
2929 Association Tour, winning two Tour titles and placing in the top
3030 10 in three of the four major championships; and
3131 WHEREAS, Since the start of the 2006 season, playing in 72
3232 events, she has won 21 tournaments, including two major
3333 championships, has placed 58 times in the top 10, has won three
3434 Player of the Year awards, and has been named the Associated
3535 Press top female athlete two years in a row; in 2007, she became
3636 the world's number one ranked golfer and the first woman to make
3737 more than $4 million in a single season; she won the Vare Trophy
3838 for the years 2006 through 2008 for having the Ladies
3939 Professional Golf Association's lowest scoring average; and
4040 WHEREAS, In November of 2008, she hosted the new Lorena
4141 Ochoa Invitational, an annual Tour event held on her original
4242 home course, the Guadalajara Country Club; proceeds from the
4343 tournament help support the Lorena Ochoa Foundation, one of the
4444 many ways Lorena gives back to her community; the foundation
4545 operates a primary school in Guadalajara for underprivileged
4646 students and a high school that opened in 2008 with 21 freshman
4747 students; and
4848 WHEREAS, While the game of golf has earned Lorena fame, it
4949 is her muy simptico personality that has earned her the
5050 admiration and respect of the public, her legions of fans, and
5151 her colleagues on the golf course; now, therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5353 Legislature, hereby commend Lorena Ochoa for her many
5454 accomplishments as a golfer and for her altruistic endeavors and
5555 extend to her best wishes for continued success; and, be it
5656 further
5757 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5858 Lorena Ochoa as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
