                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1033
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 join the City of San Benito on the special occasion of the
 memorial tribute to the life of Freddy Fender, the dedication of
 his gravesite, and the grand opening of San Benito Memorial Park
 on June 6, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, The Freddy Fender Memorial in the city's new
 cemetery will feature six monuments surrounding the final
 resting place of the late musician that depict his personal life
 and professional accomplishments; and
 WHEREAS, Born and raised in San Benito, Baldemar Huerta
 took the name Freddy Fender when he began recording the soulful
 music that rose to the top of the charts and earned him much fame;
 he had a long and prolific career and received many awards,
 including a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; and
 WHEREAS, His life is also memorialized in the Freddy Fender
 Museum, which contains his Grammy awards and other artifacts, and
 in the name of the Freddy Fender Water Tower, a San Benito
 landmark; and
 WHEREAS, Freddy Fender cherished his hometown, and it is
 fitting that the City of San Benito honor the memory of the famous
 entertainer, admired humanitarian, and one of the city's most
 beloved native sons; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby honor the memory of Freddy Fender and extend
 best wishes to his family and to San Benito officials for a
 memorable dedication ceremony for the Freddy Fender Memorial in
 the San Benito Memorial Park; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
 commemorate this special occasion.
